"Amp modeling comes of age"

I bought a VT40X used this summer and I've been floored. I have Mesa Boogie and Frenzel tube amps so I can compare sounds anytime and don't have to play solid state if I don't want to. When it's evening or late night and I want to be nice to the neighbors this thing comes out and I don't have to feel deprived at all. The Dumble (Boutique OD) in particular gives beautiful rounded bell tones at all volume levels and reacts naturally to increased gain. British 800 sounds like what its intended to mimic. I expected to hate the speaker but it seems fine. The software is needed so that you can tweak the amp to get exactly what you want. It's a bit of a pain but worth it. The user interface on the amp is pretty terrible but once you're set up you won't need to change it very often. Overall this is a gem of a small amp that could stand up to small gigs with no problem as long as you can get it up off the floor on a chair or stand. I'd buy another one of these anytime, and highly recommend it for beginners who need to find their sound and decide what hardware will be best for them. Buy one of these, figure it out and then go spend on pro gear later. You'll keep the VT40X, it's a great bedroom or livingroom amp.

I had to get rid of my highly upgraded Fender Blues Jr. but decided to try this modeling amp which runs a 12AX7 in their power section. I got the footswitch for it too, so that I could operate on the fly while playing out. I just played my first gig and the amp performed really well with far more variations in tone than my former amp had available. It is quite light to carry and looks great on the amp stand. I think that upgrading the speaker is a consideration if you need "gig volume", but for the bedroom musician, it sounds just great. I use the Fender tweed and the Vox AC30 sounds the most, but the amp models are all pretty unique. The manual is only 12 pages but you can spend hours experimenting with the wide range of available flavors. I would recommend this amp to a whole lot of people who are not "tube aficionados."

I got this after a Fender Champion 50xl return, just did not like the Fender much at all. This little guy takes a few days to create some great tones of your own, but they are in there. Beautiful cleans with stand alone tone or add some effects. The many flavors of overdrives and distortions are amazing, you can even take the cleans and put an overdrive pedal in front, it is an effect option...secret is treble 12 o'clock, bass 2 o'clock and mids 3 o'clock smooths out and fattens the tone...lots of fun, thinking the 100 watt with a 12 inch speaker is a steal at that price.

If you don't have one of these in that wall of amps you practice on, you're not guitaring right. Easy to use, fun, sounds amazing (especially for what it is and the price), and seems to be capable of just about anything. Highly, highly, highly recommended!

For whatever reason, perhaps because of other amps I use, I had a notion to turn the volume and power levels to 12 oclock, resulting in harsh dynamics and thoroughly wretched sound that flung itself in my face. I puzzled over it for 2 days. Then I accidently lowered the volume to 9 oclock and reduced the power level to 11 or so. A more conducive, rational sound to work with. Duh!!! I seemed to defy logic and common sense. Now? The amp is rich and smoother. I can say with confidence it is a great amp with expressive, authentic tone any guitar player would love.
