Some of the online reviews I read, as well as video reviews I watched, the commentators who showed any negativity towards this amp was because they were comparing her to the Vox AC line amps. There seems to be a preconceived notion that the Night Train should sound like one of those. Well, it doesn’t, nor does it make any attempt to do so. It is it’s own unique little beast with it’s own unique sound and personality. That’s one of the things I personally like about her. In fact, one of the great things about the Night Train is just how many sounds you can get out of her. Between the two channels and the “girth”, “bright” and “thick” switches, as well as your EQ settings ( bass, mid, treb) and reverb, you can have hours of knob tweaking, coaxing out a variety of tones and textures. I have a wide variety of guitars with every possible pick up configurations, so I’m still discovering new sounds with the Night Train.

I prefer plugging straight into a good tube amp, sans effects. I like to get the natural overdrive/gain from the interaction of the guitar and amp, as opposed to adding pedals. I found the Night Train has a very aggressive overdrive and can get nice and crunchy with little effort. One afternoon I found a real sweet spot using my Les Paul with her that just sent shivers straight to my marrow! And she really can sparkle on the clean tones, too. I would have preferred a genuine reverb tank, as apposed to the digital reverb. Don’t get me wrong, the reverb is fine, but I just prefer a more organic spring reverb…so just a half point off for that. And again, one of the great feature to this amp is it’s “tweakability”. Take time to explore all the various tones and textures you can get from her, she will surprise you.

Turn her on, leave her on standby for a few, then dig in! Though I prefer plugging straight in, I have used various pedal on her with good results. Most commonly I’ll use my looper pedal with a multi effect pedal for working on new song ideas. Yet I’ve ran tube overdrive, distortion, delay, tremo/pan, chorus and a Vox wah pedal through her, also with good results. I should mention that she can get really loud, too! Should be no problem being heard over your drummer in small to medium gigs. I’m more of a blues, blues based rock, hard rock player, so she works fine for my needs. I can not speak to those who want to shred and melt faces. Your results may vary, kids!

Like my Vox AC15 C2, this amp is extremely well built. And, like her big sister, she’s very easy on the eyes. This is a very classy looking amp. All of the knobs feel solid and smooth. The whole amp is build solid like a tank, again, just like her sibling.

For the money (and with zZounds great customer service and payment options!) you can’t go wrong. These Vox amps are built solid and really deliver. As with my Vox AC15 C2, I believe I’ve gotten much more for less money with the Night Train G2 than with some of their competitors.

Not every had to deal with them.

I think the Vox line of amps just look really cool and the sound will blow you away. So yes, WOW!
