"The One-man Jam Solution"

I play regular gigs as the one-man show in the corner of your local pub/eatery with my acoustic, a looper, vocal harmonizer and guitar effects- the latest version of my pedal board has been built up over the past 2 years for more money than I care to add up. It includes the vocal harmonizer (TC Helicon's Harmony g-xt), overdrive, boost, octaver, acoustic modelling preamp, looper and a multi-effect unit (a Zoom multistomp)... The Voicelive 3 replaces it all in one swoop, and does it better than everything else. As a bonus: there are no cables between effects to route and go bad, and no external mixing needed (guitar in, mic in, P.A. out) and even my in-ear monitor system is unnecessary now, as the VL3 includes a special headphone monitor mix and a custom guitar + headphone cable to get the headphone signal to you! Yes, the menus and parameters can be bewildering. Read the manual, subscribe to the forums, and watch the youtube videos produced by TC Helicon- they help immensely. The lack of a PC-based editor for all these options is a bit of a downer, but I can deal with it. Speaking of the support- TC's support is AMAZING! Got questions? Ask in the forums and it's likely that TC's spokesperson, Craig, will answer. They are amazingly responsive, and even take user input for features seriously. The guitar effects are pretty good, but they're not boutique. The vocal effects options are pretty over-the-top: everything from simple harmonies to choirs of voices to Cylons (yep, Cylons). The looper section is nice, with 3 available channels, and the option to record from Mic, Guitar, Mic+Guitar, or the aux input. There are different sync modes available, ranging from locked to a metronome to free looper. It's definitely more versatile than the Boss RC-30 I had been using, but also has a bit of a learning curve to it. Speaking of the metronome- you can push that through to your headphone mix, so you have a click track that the audience doesn't hear.

"VoiceLive3 - A Decent Product But With Drawbacks"

Overall: 3 out of 5 stars

Positives: The sound quality is very good and some of the adaptive eq unique although I prefer manual control of the eq settings for vocal purposes. The noise gating is superb and works extremely well. There is a good selection of effects. The doubling and harmonies are more lifelike than in other competing units. Negatives: The guitar module within VoiceLive3 is only fair. I would not recommend the guitar module when a BOSS guitar effects board can surpass the functionality and sounds within the VoiceLive3 at a fraction of the price. The guitar eg and gain staging are odd and not very intuitive. Here is my biggest complaint -> the parameter editing screen on the VoiceLive3 is terrible, a huge negative. The unit has deep layers of parameter editing available but it is painstaking to call them up and not intuitive to program. Furthermore, TC Helicon have not designed their own PC program for viewing and editing the unit's parameters. This really surprised me and it should be made available asap - particularly in lieu of the substantial pricetag attached to the VoiceLive3 unit. There is a third party vendor online that makes an editor for the VoiceLive3 and it works fairly well. But the company should be trumpeting the availability of onscreen editing because the lack of a TC Helicon onscreen editor is a nearly unforgivable oversight. The tiny screen on the unit is about unusable for serious editing. I am going to keep the unit, but in retrospect I would not repurchase it because the guitar processing and lack of an included onscreen editor detract considerably from the overall value.

Having had my Voicelive 3 now for two weeks I can honestly say it was worth the wait. I had originally intended to buy the VoiceLive 2 but held off when I heard the third version was coming out. It is phenomenal. Once again TC Helicon has come through. They are fast becoming my go to company for equipment.

"Voice live 3 Manual"

Overall: 3 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

The manual sucks. When I go to look up how to use a tab all the manual does is repeat what the tab is labeled on the unit ... Nothing is said as to what the many different controls do. $800 and you will have to spend years of trial and error learning how to use the device. The response from Helicon is virtually non-existent. They REALLY REALLY need to get somebody to sit down and produce an instruction manual that is helpful. I have sent many ... many emails asking questions and I have never gotten a response. NEVER!!! I have had my Voice live for 6 or 7 years. I just use a couple of effects. I would use more but as I wrote above... the manual is useless. I would rate the unit much higher if the manual told me how to use the device. It doesn't even tell me how to use the voice control. Craig had a Youtube video on the subject and all he said was that as you learn to sing better you won't hear so much phasing in your earphones but not a word as to how to set it up. It would be helpful if they told you how to record your songs so they sounded professional. When you record using the USB port or the earphone port the recorded sound is like nothing anybody would ever want to listen to.
