"Good product, a few little limits."
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I have to say I enjoy using this product. There are some limits to it but there is still lots of room to be creative on it.
Sound
I thought the sound is pretty good on this product.
Features
I like that I can organize verses, choruses and so on.And plus you can tell the backround istruments what notes to play. The only thing is that it only has limited backround rhythms to each genre of music.
Quality
All parts still working fine, had for 2 years. I have never dropped it though. One problem I had was a pattern loading error which apparently ment I lost the pattern and beats from the card. The manual didn't say much about the error. But All I had to do was connect to the pc and copy and paste the missing pattern from the tascam software onto the card.
Value
I really don't know what other recording products have. So I don't know if others have more or less features.
The Wow Factor
I can't wait to put my music on the computer.

"Fine little product, horrible manuals!"
I'll probably graduate to something more sophisticated and hopefully better supported.
Sound
Well I'm not a recording engineer. I've made about 4 or 5 mp3s with it so far and they sound pretty darned good to me.
Features
One of the reasons I came here to write a review is that the presentation of this product is a tragedy. The basic features, being able to record a song very simply and convert to mp3 is fantastic; as a songwriter that's what I'm looking for. It's a lovely little thing for the price. The main wrongheaded feature is the Tone Generator -- seven million backup band songs that are just absurd. All I want is a backup drum track, and I'm still trying to figure that out -- you have to delete all the other instruments and then do copy/pastes, is my suspicion. So that's today's project, God help me.
Quality
It's not top quality, but you get what you pay for. I wish they had charged me a bit more and included a more powerful flash card.

"Not Ready for Prime Time"
From my experiences with this unit, digital recorders, at least budget models, have a long ways to go before they can be considered user-friendly. This unit was confusing, complicated and difficult to use. The display and menus were just aggravating. The "tone generator" musical tracks were of no use to me. As I said, after two weeks of working with it I was getting no recording done so I exchanged it for a four track recorder.
Sound
Not outstanding. Kinda hard to tell, since after two weeks, I still was having trouble getting it to do the most basic things.
Features
Some people really like the pre-programmed backing tracks to "jam" with. As a songwriter, these were useless to me. The display is tiny and hard to read, the menus are confusing and complicated. There are lots of things you have to remember to do depending on what you're trying to record. (set up this input, switch that button, press the other button, turn the wheel... etc.)
Quality
Very cheap feel to this recorder. The sliders feel like they could break off easily. It looks good, but kind of toy-like. I did not test the battery life.
Value
The price is reasonable. I don't know how it compares to other digital recorders.
Manufacturer Support
For help, I went to the Tascam forum for this product. The folks there were helpful and encouraging. Altho they had plenty of good tips, I still found the machine hard to work with and confusing.
The Wow Factor
I thought it looked good, when seeing it online. Getting it out of the box, it still looked cool, but cheaply made.

TASCAM PS5 Pocketstudio5 4-Track Recorder Customer Review
Sound
lots of noise in the tracks if you don't have drums in it. Also tascam should of use a higher mp3 rate. When you record in mp3 the bit rate must be higher then 128. Also the sound samples could of been better. You have to use a mic preamp or its to easy to distort the sound with the internal preamp.
