"An Excellent Option For Camera Rigs And Well Worth The Investment"

Went exploring for an upgrade to our DR-40X camera rigs, wound up back with Tascam. We couldn't beat the DR-701D at this price-point and it's a big plus to be familiar with the Tascam way of doing things. Both recorders do a great job,and we can now use the DR-40X models for ambient sound and such, while the DR-701D as our primary. (We also use recorder monitors). We desired the SMPTE since we use an A6000 and once again, the DR-701D nailed it. Pretty cool to see Tascam still around and providing gear for the home-brew crowd! I can recall back when I lived alongside dinosaurs and vampires,we used cassette based Tascam PortaStudio's to cut demos. One other thing;Tascam met our needs so well, regarding our camera rigs, when we needed to add a mixer into our AA Discrete Synergy 4 interfaces stereo channel 3/4 inputs,we chose the 12 from Tascam. Wow,what a mixer/recorder/interface! We plan to upgrade to an SSL siX soon but the Tascam 12 is sticking around:too useful to give up. We didn't start off with intentions to have so much Tascam gear,but...here we are. We found gear that met all our needs,it was moderately inexpensive, has proven to be durable (if treated in a professional manner w/proper cases),and even speaks the same 'language' between devices. Money can buy better but these work great for us. zZounds has been the best all around vendor for a couple years now, even during the pandemic madness. We dig 'em,man!
Ease of Use
The learning curve is less than for the DR-40X handheld. Knobs are small but have to be to,so all good.
Quality
Plastic isn't my fave thang, yet these are very durable if treated correctly.
Value
This 6-track field recorder is perfect in it's niche of the world. Well done, Tascam. (Jinx, I HATE to say that because all my gear will usually stop working within a week but so far Tascam has been cool)

"Great for Sony Mirrorless camera shooters"

I use this with both my Sony A6400 and A6600 mirrorless cameras. Both of these camera bodies feature the ability to send timecode over HDMI so the DR-701D was a great choice for my setup. I sync my footage with the recorder and syncing footage and audio in Adobe Premiere and Davinci Resolve is flawless. Amazing quality and features for this price point. Even using this with my AKG C214 condenser microphone was a dream, amazing handling of the phantom power hungry mic. Also love that I can power this bad boy up over USB. Using a 20,000mah battery pack I was able to run interviews all weekend without a hitch.
