I'd prefer to use the Tascam DR-701D for our DSLR camera rigs but have found the DR-40X is an excellent second choice. The dual record mode has saved the day more than once and is available on both models. Plus,the camera audio I/O options on this handheld make it a perfect option for recording ambient tracks. Also doubles as podcast mic,stereo recorder for live music tracks,etc. I tend to despise the function/control buttons on all handhelds,but this one causes me the less stress. It's plastic and not heavy duty deluxe,yet ours hasn't failed in over a year of constant use. We will purchase another DR-40X if we ever need another handheld-it's a keeper.

Tascam has provided stellar customer service for us, even during pandemic. We've purchased two Tascam recorders since Jan 2021and the company has always got back to us if we needed anything. The rebate accessories arrived quick,too!
