"Great palm sized field recorder! "

This is the newest addition to the line of Tascam recorders I have. I am brand loyal so that's why I (currently) have three (3) Tascam recorders...DP-24, DP-008 (older model) and now the DR MKII. I needed a recorder to take with me to gather sound effects for songs and videos. I have a mini voice recorder made by Sony (Wal-Mart), but its not good on getting clear sounds. The usually come out distorted. So, a recorder like that is more suited for voice memos or something where high quality audio isn't really needed. The DP-24 is way too big for field recording and the DP-008 is good but I find it too bulky for gathering sound effects. So, the DR100 MKII wins. It has a lot of settings to get the right sound...much like the bigger recorders, but its palm sized. The mics on it are real clear picking up the faintest of sounds. If you want to run some other kind of Mic...just plug it in. The DR100 MKII has phantom power so you can run a condenser if needed/wanted. Overall I really like the DR100 MKII. I have no complaints as of yet. It does what I ask of it...reproduce sounds more clear than my ears.
Sound
This recorder is super clear.
Features
It has many setting features as a "big" recorder does.
Ease of Use
If you're new to recording there are lots of things to learn. The DR100 MKII comes with an easy to read manual, and has a "quick start" section. My advise is to read the manual front to back a few times and experiment with different settings in different environments, and hear the difference between them. Once you got the basics its pretty intuitive from there. Have fun. Don't give up.
Quality
It seems to be built pretty good.
Value
Good value for the price and all the settings it has.
Manufacturer Support
I haven't had to deal with Tascam on any level concerning any of the recorders I have. Its usually "operator error" on my part.
The Wow Factor
I'm impressed with how many bells and whistles this hand held recorder has.

Musical Background:

I've been in and around music my whole life. I play trumpet, bass, drums, spoons you name it, I play it.

Musical Style:

I'm a musician so I play everything. Some better than others, but it's fun to jam whatever you're feeling.

"best budget pro portable"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Film crews love this machine.
Sound
Flat and faithful reproduction, with suitably beefy preamps
Features
Most useful: the many switches that let you avoid menu diving, the continuous analog rec level wheels, the beefy battery capacity, the phantom power, & the minijack ins and outs. Least useful: the onboard speaker.
Ease of Use
Anyone familiar with pro portables will find it easy and intuitive to use.
Quality
It's a sturdy build, mine is four or five years old and still going strong. The rechargeable battery needed replacement after three years.
Value
This is cheapest truly pro portable recorder on the market. The Zooms have more bells and whistles, but don't compare on the critical features
Manufacturer Support
The first one they shipped would not charge properly. Tascam promptly sent me a new one, which has worked perfectly since.

Musical Background:

I am a geezer who has played music since grade school, and have 30 years of experience in recording and audio production.

Musical Style:

Eclectic tastes - I'm in a large garage band that delves into many genres.
