TASCAM DR07 Recorder Customer Review

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Sound
Excellent sensitivity and sound quality.
Features
the only "accessory" is the 2 GB SD card - which works.
Ease of Use
the controls are well positioned and easy to use. Big readout is great, with nice meters.
Quality
the case is light plastic. This helps keep the weight down but the device would probably not survive a fall. It would certainly be destroyed if someone stepped on it!
Value
at $139 it's a steal.

The Wow Factor
the unit looks nice - very professional

"Good quality sound reproduction but power hungry."

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I wish I knew about the enormous power consumption
Sound
Not having an external speaker is an inconvenience. When you want to review what you've just recorded and listen to it with somebody else, using the earphones is just not the same as hearing it audibly. The sound is great. VERY sensitive. Don't shout or put the unit right on top of the source. Be careful about percussive noise. i.e. don't touch or move the device while recording. Get a short photographic tripod to screw into the unit's built in mount. It'll keep it from picking up unwanted vibration say if you just place it upon a table while recording. The display is nice but the system of long number readouts for identifying tracks is tedious and makes laborious filing and categorizing the individual files that you want to keep on your computer. The biggest drawback of all is the power consumption. Two double A (AA) batteries are drained in a HURRY. You MUST get an accessory AC transformer power supply whe you are using this to work at your computer while transfering files or you will personally be filling your local landfill with all of the spent alkaline used batteries that you consume. In a very short time you will be spending many times the purchase price of the DR07 in spent batteries. You don't have to buy THEIR accessory power source at over $21 With all of the electronic devices most people own nowadays, you might have an unused transformer. Just be sure the power rating is the same and that , of course, the tiny connector will fit into the DR07 port. It is sub-miniature and will fool you! Of you can't find one then i guess you'll nave no choice but to break out the bucks for the applicable AC accessory power transformer that Tascam offers.
Features
I shore wisht it had an external speaker! Otherwise though the unit is so compact and well thought out. the buttons are mostly large and accessable for even the pudgiest of fingers.
Ease of Use
Initial controls to start and stop are very easy with large buttons . other controls not so intuitive and will take a short learning curve to master. Would be nice to have a website with product info and, why not, a few demo videos to help us come up to speed with this unit and to take full advantage of the features that otherwise, many will fail to learn and toutilize for getting the finer aspects of recording with the DR07. TASCAM are you listening?
Quality
No problems yet. I recommend a unit sized soft zipper case to protect this unit. It will help preserve it when you "throw it into a gig-bag along with other cords and gear so it won't get dirty or bunged up! I found something in my rummaging around the house that not only fits but has an elastic band that holds the recorder in the bag so I can open the case for use without even taking it out of the zippered case.
Value
This is a powerful tool worth every penny at this price. Much better than any other personal recording device I have ever used. The 2 gig card seems inexhaustible. Ample memory for every use. Especially if you are disciplined and dump your files regularly to file them on your computer and free up the space on your card. Or just get multiple cards. But you must be disciplined about marking and filing and categorizing or you will soon be up to your ears in files that you won't have time to review and soon forget what they are. This is called being in the Doo - Doo.
Manufacturer Support
I do have questions about the setting up and accessing files but have not made contact with the mfctr. TASCAM has a long and respected track-record (no pun intended). They sort of pioneered the home recording industry way before its current crest of popularity.
The Wow Factor
I originally liked the muted gray-black unit as it was understated and professional looking. But I had to return it almost immediately due to a sound quality flaw and when I went to return/replace it they were out of the black and only had the special holiday production run in RED. But I needed the recorder and got it anyway unsure if I would be happy with this choice. But I got accustomed to it and even like it now. (So I keep in a dark zipper case)

"Where else do you get this kind of sound quality for the money?"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Assuming the DR-07 handles being used every day in the field for news production, I don't see what more I would need. Even if it lasted a year (which is what it is warranted for), I would just buy another. In fact, at this price, I'm considering buying another one as backup (just as I have backup professional cameras). You don't go on assignment without backups. I want the fluffy mic cover too, but one accessory that could be a huge seller is a custom hard/plastic case with foam cutouts for two DR-07s, extra batteries, cards, wind mic covers, small tripod, and ear buds, and I would buy it. Instead, I bought a gun case in which to put my kit. Price that at about $30 and I bet they'd fly off the shelves.
Sound
My first recording with the DR-07 was at the highest WAV format available. The sound was crystal clear. To my amazement, it was as good as the recording station in my home studio. I then recorded at a much smaller Mhz/bit rate and it still had the same quality. I am thrilled. I read reviews of how good it was, but they were for recording band rehearsals, and I use mine for press interviews. So I was very pleased by the digital response and absolutely clean backgrounds when recording spoken words.
Features
Are there features it could have? Yes. A speaker for playing back would be wonderful, but I use an earbud to monitor recording levels anyway. You could add an equalizer and all kinds of other nonsense. If I was rating it on features alone, I might give it a 6 or so. The reason I gave it a 10 is because the DR-07 provides "just enough" features. Others I looked at were very complex, and disjointed. The DR-07's interface is extremely well thought out. The menus work perfectly. No more than I need.
Ease of Use
This is the DR-07's biggest plus. It is so easy to use, and the controls are not confusing. Not that I'm easily confused, but when you are recording news stories, things can get heated, and the last thing you want to worry about is a control that is set incorrectly.
Quality
I've only used the unit for a month or so now, so I am always leary of being too eager in making a statement about quality. Like it's hardware and software design, it seems to be just enough to do the job. It is not small, and that is a plus for handling. It is not too heavy either, and that is a big plus. It is a perfect balance between size and weight, in my opinion. I'm glad I bought the DR-07 instead of the smaller DR-08 because it is the perfect size for me. We'll see about quality, but it is beautifully finished, so I would expect the build quality to be there as well.
Value
I looked at Sony, Olympus, and all the other office-product type recorders, and all of those were much more expensive for the same memory and ability to plug in a USB port. The Tascam DR-07 is mind blowing quality and value in every respect. I just wish more people thought to look to a professional sound engineering company and retailer, like Tascam and zzounds.com, for their recording needs, instead of their office supply store. If they did, they would get a much better deal.
Manufacturer Support
I haven't needed support at all. The manual is very good, so I would say the support is all you need. My only suggestion for the manual is that a section be added regarding sound quality, formats, and recommendations for which settings to use for what uses.
The Wow Factor
The ONLY thing that would be zippier is if it had those cool, angled mics that cris-cross each other on the top. But they would be more exposed to the elements.

I will use this until it breaks and then by another. Multi track mixing would be nice but I have a computer for that with a large screen so that is where the mixing will be done. This unit is ABSOLUTELY Perfect for what I need. Thanks again Tascam!!
Sound
Captures Everything, All the sparkles in an acoustic. Perfect. That tells me to change my electric sound little and it will sound better recorded too. Great Tool!
Features
The included windscreen was a GREAT idea. That's what moved the score back up to a 9. FOR THE PRICE very hard to expect a power supply, but that's why the score is not a 10. I had to get a case, already had a nice tripod that works PERFECT. But again, for the PRICE, no complaints with no other included accessories and unit is made to be compatible wit tripod etc. so very happy in that regard. I'd rather have the low upfront price than many accessories I don't need. Thanks, Tascam!!!
Ease of Use
NO learning curve. It was capturing great recordings right outta the box!!
Quality
Would use a Heavy case if I took it on the road. It seems like it will last long after I've got my money's worth. They could have put it in a titanium case and charged me 300, but they didn't. Cannot complain about quality whatsoever when you get a great recorder for less than $110. Does seem sturdy enough for a year or two of good recordings though. And that's an amazing deal.
Value
Best Value I've ever seen.
Manufacturer Support
I had to give them a 10 because I've never had to deal with them. They make durable products and I'm sure this will be no exception. It looks on par with previous recorders I've had from them.
The Wow Factor
the size and portability of it are awesome. To be able to hear your own recordings is an uplifting experience, one of the best for any artist. This device makes that possible and excels at it, giving you an exact recording every time. What could be more sexy than That?

"Once you've had a DR07, you can't go back!!"

I expect to use this for years.
Sound
This is one awesome recorder. Records in stereo so it picks up everything... sometimes a bit of a problem with ambient noise, but if you take precautions you can reduce some of it. I am still learning all that the DR07 can do and am impressed. Cheap ear buds allow me to monitor sound on recording. Worth every penny.
Features
Included foam cover for wind noise (not mentioned on box).
Ease of Use
Pretty intuitive to use, even for a gal like me! There is a learning curve, but the manual helps to address concerns and people that are really in the industry use these alot... so you can easily get advice if your eye glaze over reading manuals.
Quality
Quality seems good. Foam wind cover is chintzy... an upgrade wouldn't kill them to include in the basic kit. You'll end up using it lots, so you'll want to have lots of batteries on hand or an adaptor to plug in.
Value
Could have chosen different recorder that was cheaper, but the DR07 is practically an industry standard and provides great sound and many options.
Manufacturer Support
Have not dealt with the company yet and hope not to in the forseeable future!
The Wow Factor
It's aesthetic is conventional, but it's very portable and technically good, so it's a great addition to my set up.
