Seymour Duncan SJB3 Quarter Pound J-Bass Pickup

A strong attack and rich tone have made the J-style pickup a must-have pickup. This Seymour Duncan tightens the sound with great sustain and response.

"BAD. @$$."

I bought this along with a Quarter Pound P-Bass pickup as upgrades to the muddy EMG-designed pickups in my mid-90s Alvarez "Villain" 4-string, and the difference is impossible to miss. SOOOO much more clarity, punch, character, and output! The midrange is pronounced, but not overly so - i'm getting a noticeable boost in all frequencies, but now my bass has a voice and presence it never had before. A lot meatier than the cheap stock pickup, I hear the bass cutting through my guitar tracks without drowning anything out. Clarity without being too sharp or brittle. I play mostly metal, but I also dabble in R&B, funk, and blues, and this set is perfect for literally everything. I've seen a few reviews complaining about 60-cycle hum (it IS a single-coil), but my bass is shielded well so I haven't had any buzz whatsoever. If you're worried about noise, don't - just spend the couple bucks for the copper shielding tape that your bass should've had installed at the factory and spend half an hour putting it in the control cavity. Buy this pickup. Or better yet, buy a set to fit every slot in your bass.

"Sounds great live, but noisy in studio"
I have the Basslines Quarter Pound PJ set in my Yamaha RBX460, and the bridge J pickup is not hum cancelling. Therefore, it is all but useless to me when recording with this particular bass. The hum isn't terrible -- I can use this pickup if I'm playing live, where you have a little room for noise and hum. However, as a studio session player, I can't utilize the great J- tone this pickup has to offer because of the noise. If you have a Jazz bass, or a bass with 2 J-style pickups, the set (neck/bridge) IS hum cancelling via reverse polarity. In other words, when the neck pickup and bridge pickup are on full blast, the opposite winding and magnetism of the two pickups together kill the hum. However, just having the one pickup, noise-city with recording. If you're looking for a PJ set, you may want to consider EMG's active or passive, because the J is not noisy on its own like this one.

Sound
I own three of the pick up sets that Duncan offers , personally there the only pick ups that I'll buy , this one , makes the mids stand out and a boost in the output overall , I have also mixed pick ups , not telling how , if you want an old school sound buy the vintage, you may loose a little of bottom but I have enough amp to put it back , once again Zzounds was the only company I didn't have to wait to get it from . Thanks Zzounds .
Features
It comes with everything needed , except the obvious items
Ease of Use
I'd listen to sound bites or call Seymore Duncan to find what your looking for most of the time the advertisements leave somethingto be desired.
