"Samson C-Control sounds bad."

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I bought this but will not be using it. I can't hear through it properly. Darn shame. I guess I'll have to wait until Behringer steals the idea.
Sound
It really does add lo-fi to the sound. I am monitoring my MOTU 828 through 20/20bas monitors and it sounds great until I put the Samson C-Control in the chain--then it gets mushy and the imaging and detail are all gone. Darn, I really wanted this to work but it sounds gross. I may find some use for the thing, or not. Anybody want one used a few minutes only?
Features
I love the feature set. Just what I need. Too bad it sounds so bad.
Quality
Nice solid box etc., but its main job is to pass clean signal to my monitors, and it does NOT do that.
Value
Sure it's cheap, but for me it was a waste of money.
Manufacturer Support
No idea.
The Wow Factor
I like the box a lot. Solid. Fits the rack adapter solidly. Cool box. Too bad it sounds so bad.

"Don't Buy a Samson C-Control!!"

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Purchaser zZounds has verified that this reviewer purchased this specific product from us.
It ain't no good to me if I can't use it. For perspective, I monitored off of the digital output of a TASCAM CD player into a Lucid 9624 DAC to the C-Control using short star-quad cables with gold connectors to a pair of Dynaudio BM15A monitors with a BX30 subwoofer. I "A-B'ed" between the direct out of the Lucid and the throughput of the C-Control. If you have low-quality gear to start with, the C-Control will make your gear sound even MORE low quality. This will hinder the process of making accurate judgments about any sound that passes through it.
Sound
The C-Control does NOT have a transparent signal path. High frequencies are rolled off somewhere around 10kHz, degrading the transients and making the sound mushy and less clear than the original. Its self-noise isn't as bad as I might have expected at this price point. Anyway, the primary reason I returned it was the signal degradation.
Features
The feature set is just what many project studio owners who primarily use a computer without mixer would need to select different monitors, check mixes in mono, use a built-in talkback mic, dim switch, etc. (that's why I bought it). It's also nice that it only occupies 1/2 rack space. I deduct a point for the TRS/RCA connectors (rather than XLR) and the wall wart power supply.
Quality
It's actually pretty solid looking, and buttons and knobs look tougher than one would expect for $100. The finish, faceplate, molded feet (removable for use in a rack), are all fine. I give it a "6" because the essential internal components are just not up to par.
Value
It would be exceedingly reasonable if it sounded good (in fact, probably impossible to achieve).
Manufacturer Support
No experience.
The Wow Factor
I think this will be very popular and appealing to a lot of people because of its feature set, size, and price, regardless of it's low sound quality. It also looks cool, and fits in with a family of other Samson "C" series devices (they're even stackable). That's why despite my initial pessimism, I tried it out. Well, you get what you pay for. I'm just really glad that zzounds has a liberal return policy!

"Expensive monitors don't create golden ears..."

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
Majority rules... I didn't want to believe it, but it's true. I bought this junker and it cuts the highs, it's muddy...there's no ignoring it. The SNR is poor and the Frequency Response is lopped at the top...READ THE SPECS AND COMPARE FOR YOURSELF. Really though, considering who this product is aimed at I'm surprised Samson tried to sell this lemon as gold. The name of the game is sound quality, and this item does NOT deliver professional audio. As if your seasoned ears aren't going to notice the depletion of your expensive professional audio equipment. Shame on you Samson...this is a "consumer" product at best. NOTE: I know the old adage, you get what you pay for... so if anyone is interested in at least having desktop volume control and headphone monitoring, check out the "PreSonus HP4"...same price, less features, HIGH QUALITY (Budget) AUDIO DELIVERY! Heads up!

"Don't make the mistake I did"

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars

I figured I could live with the poor sound quality for a while. I just needed to get through a couple of sessions using it for it's talk back features. However, those stopped working mid-session with the talk-to cue feature getting stuck in the 'on' position. The internal amp for the built-in mic has an excessively high amount of self-noise, so this box quickly became worthless junk.

overall the unit is built decent but it does not function as planned. if you have good equipment it wont match well my biggest upset is overall sound quality . volume level is horribly low even at its highest.. headphone output sucks low end sucks. and you have to buy rca to 1/4 or rca to 3prong = equals a big no bueno!!!! and its going back to the store as sooooon as possible!

"Damn fine piece of kit actually. Works as advertised."

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
I've read the two reviews that say the Samson isn't transparent. That is certainly *not* my experience, and I've checked by A/Bing with the C Control in and out of the loop. I can't detect any difference. I monitor on Genelecs so it's not that me speakers are so bad I can't hear the difference.
Features
For the price I couldn't want any more. As well as the main mix in there are 3 stereo ins and outs, 3 speaker pair outs, a talkback mic that routes either to the or to one of the 2-trk outs, and a headphone amp. Plus a mute button, a dim button and a mono button.
Quality
Seems solid and well put together. I hate the wall wart though.
Value
I think it's priced about right.
Manufacturer Support
No experience.
