This is a great file that is easy to use and did make a big difference in an acoustic guitar I had that had fret ends I thought could be smoother. The handle is ergonomic and two sides of the file are totally smooth, as is the tip, so you realize can’t damage your guitar as you use it. Just make sure to watch some videos so you get the angle right - you’re not supposed to file it flush. Also, they put an arrow on the handle to let you know which file side is the coarser side, but to be honest I found it confusing because the arrow pertains to how you’re holding the handle when it should have just pointed to the coarser side itself. It’s technically pointing towards one of the totally smooth “safe” sides. Music Nomad also sells a B-File with the wooden handle but that is really more for actual fret sprout, not smoothing out fret ends.

I got one for the protruding frets on my Steinberger Spirit bass (Hot Rod Red) I purchased from zZOUNDS. I always keep my nails especially on my fretting hand short and smooth. I attend to the nails on my picking hand similarly. MY POINT is that you are not just buying this for protruding frets, it makes a quite good nail file, so you can get other uses out of that expense too. By the way, if frets protrude, it's usually because you live in a chronically low-humidity area. Your wood shrinks when it dries out. The alternative is to keep your guitar in sufficient humidity. Of course that's possible, but I doubt that most people have the free-time and motivation to monitor that 24/7/365 ad infinitum. That's also part of what goes with the territory when you buy a $5-600 bass guitar. All things considered, the Steinberger Spirit bass, in all of its varieties is an AMAZING VALUE. Looks sexy and sounds sexy too. AND....zZOUNDS sent me one for FREE when I called and spoke with them about my protruding frets after the bass arrived in our 12% California humidity from New Jersey where it's commonly 3 times higher. For ALL who have fretted instruments of any sort, you really should have one of these on-hand just as you have other simple tools to use in making adjustments and changes along the way. Get one! You will be happy you did.

Should be one of your hand tools for your guitar to keep in your case, along with wire snips, phillips screwdriver, allen wrenches, etc. And...it does fairly decent job of filing smooth your fingernails on your fretting hand. By the way, living in a low-humidity climate area is what causes the neck wood to shrink, possibly leaving some of the fret-ends poking out. If the condition has not been attended to, it's probably a side-effect of purchasing a low-cost instrument. That 'bargain' price has to come from some sacrificed "frill." The alternative is to try to keep your guitar sufficiently humidified 24/7 which is much easier said than done. Fix 'em once and you're done. (in the ratings, i gave "wow factor" only a 4, but files don't need to thrill people anyway, do they? should it be rhinestone-encrusted??)
