I've now owned the 4:40 1x12 for about 6 months after owning the 2:20 1x10 for well over a year. I switched because I now play in a few venues that don't mic amps and wanted more low end fullness. I'll get what I don't like out of the way first: When the reverb is past noon or so it feels like the mix between wet and dry signal is just too high as it gets really washed out and overwhelming. I wish the mix between dry and wet signal allowed for a longer reverb trail with more front end note clarity, kind of like pre-delay. It almost sounds closer to a very very large cathedral type reverb at higher levels. I suppose that may be a good thing for you depending on what you are looking for. With that being said anything before noon is fantastic for all manner of americana music. Subtle but bright at low levels, drippy just before noon. Other than there being too many fantastic tones and having to choose how I want to set the amp, I have zero complaints or gripes otherwise. What I love: The cleans and edge of break-up tones are to die for. Overdrive ranges anywhere from chimey, growly Bassman-esque tones to Rolling Stones "Can't you hear me knocking." The EQ stack is wildly versatile. Yes, it's a tweed amp and therefore has some mid push, but if you crank the master and back off the gain and mids you can get into blackpanel territory that works wonderfully for a pedal platform (if you're running it as a pedal platform backing off the mids is important since most of us use some type of mid-forward pedal to cut through). The wattage options aren't just for volume and headroom purposes - some have a sharper attack with less compression, some have less attack and more compression. Just another way to dial in the tone you're looking for. The relationship between the master volume and gain provides endless tonal options. The master volume is also highly effective for getting cranked caving in tweed tones at apartment appropriate volumes. Has a great effects loop. Looks beautiful. I think this amp is simply fantastic. Between the EQ stack, high and low inputs, wattage options, and master volume you can pull all sorts of tweed and clean blackpanel-esque tones out of it. At 40 watts there's all sorts of headroom. You can dime it and play at night in an apartment without getting evicted. It has an effects loop for even more versatility (I run a Tone King Imperial Preamp through it) or wet effects if desired. It plays well with any guitar I've put through it and especially loves single coils and P90s. The preamp is highly responsive to input signal so playing dynamics, guitar volume changes, and a boost pedal can cover a wide range of tones. I gigged the small one for over a year and this one now for about 6 months and other than tube rattle I haven't had any issues. I do miss the weight of the small one tho. If you live in the americana music world I HIGHLY recommend you give this amp a look.
