"The MSD: Totally Tiny Snare!"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Personally, I'd never get tired of this thing. A 6" snare is a very different idea. However, I can easily see someone thinking of this product as a waste of time.
Sound
I first found this drum at PASIC's 50th anniversary in Indianapolis, Indiana. Without the snares on, it has a full sound with adequate resonance. Sort of like a rototom with a Remo Pinstripe batter applied to it. Turn the snares on, and you have an instant piccolo snare! The snare sound has a sharp "pop" on attack and a somewhat sloshy snare response. All tone or ring is eliminated as well. This is probably caused by the fact that the snares are applied to the batter instead of a resonant.
Features
I found the twist-action throw-off to be quite a positive attribute. You can quickly and easily transform the sound of the micro snare. another great thing is the type of mounting used. You can position this drum in many different places, from a separate stand to on your hi-hat! The only downside is the little to no snare options. if you don't like the sound of the snares, there's nothing you can do about it.. Even though the tom sound is fantastic, the snares either make or break your opinion of the micro snare.
Ease of Use
the LP MSD is the most basic snare in existence. Its utter simplicity is a little overboard, though. The only options available are positioning, snare toggling, head tension, and whichever head you put on. This greatly limits the use for this drum, as the huge variety of sounds found in conventional snare drums is definitely NOT in this one.
Quality
The construction of the MSD seems quite promising. Anyone would probably look at it and say there's little chance of breaking anything unless they brought it to a sledgehammer.
Value
The price tag for the MSD is far less than I initially presumed. As a die-hard fan of tiny drums, I would have settled for more than $69 for the 6-inch. LP also offers an 8-inch variant, currently for sale at $119.
Manufacturer Support
I've never had any experience working with LP. But as long as it's not like ordering separate parts from Yamaha, I'm sure you'll be okay.
The Wow Factor
Like I said, small drums are my absolute favorite. 6" is the smallest size that serious manufacturers produce. Finding one of these as snare drum nearly gave me a heart attack. It was as if the drum was designed just for me!
