I've wanted a Gretsch ever since I saw Mike Nesmith playing them on The Monkees when I was a kid and then when I got older and got into the Rev. Horton Heat and last week thanks to zZounds great pay as you play plan I finally got one. The finish is absolutely flawless. The neck chunky but I like that. I do wish they would have kept the original Gretsch inlay on the fretboard but that is just a personal preference. The guitar definitely needed setup when I got it. The action and intonation were way off but again no big deal. I was able to fix that. When plugged in this thing sound absolutely amazing. The Baldwin blacktop filtertrons sound really jangly and bright and clear. I can't say how they compare with other models or TV Jones pickups but it definitely has that Gretsch sound. I really wanted that Gretsch G5422TDC double cutaway in snow crest white but I wasn't sure if zZounds would ever get any in so I went ahead and got this one instead. I am definitely not disappointed.

I have ordered numerous items from Zzounds and have never had any problems with their products. My new Gretsch also falls into the category of another excellent item bought from Zzounds. It is an absolutely beautiful guitar and right out of the box this beauty was ready rock or ready to roll. Even my wife, who as others out there may have asked, don't you have enough guitars already? When she saw the Gretsch, she said oh, now that is a pretty guitar! Being the frugal customer I try to be, I had been looking at these guitars for a while and saw the best price I'd seen come up on Zzounds and knew it was time to pull the trigger. I am quite happy I did, this thing is sweet!

"Gretsch 5420T Orange Electromatic Guitar"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Overall: This is the finest guitar I have ever purchased online and zZounds made it possible by standing behind their lowest price guarantee and 8 month payment plan. The Gretsch is a Gretsch and it does everything I need in spades! Features: I had read all the "nightmare" comments on this model and can state that I have encountered none of them. It stays in tune, even with heavy Bigsby action and bends. Great binding with no seams and the F holes are even attended to! Quality: This is a superb instrument and is flawless in its completed form. Made in Korea, not Indonesia has some have argued. The paint job sparkles while revealing the wood grain on front and back. No twisted headstock or bowed fret board and all the inspection paperwork is included. The Orange is apt for a Gretsch and its' history. Manufacturer Support: Gave it 21/2 stars since I have no experience with them. Sound: Works great with all my IPad apps and amps. Especially, with my Fender Bassman, but everyone pretty much knows that. It is a Gretsch so I can't find any fault with it and I love the controlled feedback you can get out of her!!!! The Bigsby has perfect placement so I can pick and strum with it cradled in my hand. Not all whammy bars are created equal!! Ease of Use: This is the main reason I got it! The neck is slick and smooth and it is surprisingly thin, in my hand, compared to my Strat. The hollow body makes it light to hold and allows you to play as long as you want with no strain on your shoulder. Naturally, you can just pick it up and play and not even bother to plug it in. Great for noodling and picking out a new lick. All the volume and tone knobs are easily accessible with the old style "G" on top of them. Pick up switch has three positions and is in the standard setting. The action was perfect, for me, right out of the box and the intonation was spot on. I can even play slide on it with no buzz! Value: zZounds made this work for me with the 8 month payment plan. Everyone would like a Falcon, but I don't have 45 tour dates planned so why spend the doe? Unless, your Gretsch lust is completely out of control! This honey fits the bill and will provide years of joy! WOW Factor: Some guitars are just yours and when you recognize it you have to embrace it. The absolute beauty and tone of this Gretsch will be held in my arms forever. The first four hours I started playing it, I realized that its features kept catching my eye and distracting me from the music. Just looking at it, you can hear it screaming to be picked iup. Because of the gorgeous Orange I had to name her the "Cacafuego", long may she play!

I ordered the Gretsch G5420T on the third of March and received it two days later. It was excellent looking and sounding right out of the box, after a little retuning (which is comman with new strings.)My favorite electric has always been Gretsch, and my favorite acoustic has been Martin.zZounds has made that dream come true with both guitars.zZounds will be my place of purchase on all my musical needs. The staff at zZounds is very courteous and prompt to fill your order.I highly recommend zZounds if your looking for quality merchandise and quick service.

zZounds IS the source for me and, as long as they've got it, I'll be getting it from them! This particular guitar wasn't a necessary purchase for me (just ask my wife!). But when I saw the pics during a random browse of the site, I couldn't turn away. For the most part, I'm a Gibson guy. My arsenal has 3 Gibsons, an Epi, a Takamine, a Tele, and now a hollow body. I sold an ES-335 years ago to my utmost regret, BUT I have to say these Black Filtertron pups and sound on this Electromatic are intriguing to say the least. I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade to some TV Jones, but for now I'm pretty psyched. Now, the color: WOW! Even my wife couldn't argue it's beauty. I'm getting compliments everywhere I go! I haven't had any real issues with intonation and it seems they did a good job setting this up. Stays in tune with the Bigsby and feels SOLID. Neck is just right for me. I truly commend the staff at zZounds for their unparalleled devotion to customer satisfaction. Remember "Customer Satisfaction"? It's a rare bird these days. Once you find someone that treats you right, I say STICK WITH 'EM. These guys not only listened to my concerns, they actively sought to overcome them and make me feel like I was a VIP. And they are so down to earth - just regular people like you and me. The Play as You Pay is an outstanding option that I couldn't pass up. My credit ain't all that grand and I still qualified. All in all, a great experience - awesome guitar, wonderful folks. When I pay this one down, I'll be back! I can't give a 'Manufacturer Support' rating as I haven't tried that one on for size yet. 'Ease of Use' got 4.5 stars only because changing the strings with a Bigsby is a task (I use a capo to lock the string tension before winding it up). 'Quality' gets 4.5 because, well - it IS what it IS. The pups are decent, but not the best and I wish the headstock was bound. But, the 'WOW Factor' gets a 5+!!!!

I absolutely love this guitar! I can barely put it down. The finish is actually warmer and better than the pictures and the sound... well it's beautiful! Love the hollow body tone and the great pickups. The neck is very playable and feels good in the hand. Overall, a great Gretsch hollow body at an accessible price. Couldn't be happier!

I have wanted a Gretsch most of my life and was finally able to purchase one.zZounds made this possible with the payment plan they have.I searched all the electric guitars and kept coming back to the G5420T.It's a beautiful guitar and sounds just as good as it looks. There were more expensive guitars but I don't feel that they would have had any easier neck action than the G5420T. Everyone that sees it loves it,and so do I.I'm very well satisfied with my purchase and thank zZounds for making it possible.

"Took a little adjusting but WOW this is super nice"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

The guitar is shipped with a small piece of thin foam packing material under the rosewood bridge .... while this doesn't look offensive it does act as a mute preventing the full string resonance from transferring to the beautiful hollow body. Keep this in mind that before you adjust the neck (I'm sure it will need it). When I loosened the strings enough to free up the foam piece I noticed the rosewood bridge did not fit the arc of the guitar top well enough to make firm contact with the guitar body this allowed the bridge to move around slightly ... even with the strings re- tensioned to be in tune. I took the guitar to a local guitar tech guru in Anoka Mn. and he reshaped the radius of the bridge to make flawless contact with the body. This along with a full neck adjustment made this the most amazing sounding and easy playing guitar I have ever owned. I own 16 guitars and this is my first Hollow body ... back in 1966 I almost bought this gretsch model but decided on a fender Jazz Master instead. Don't know why I waited so long. I highly recommend this guitar for its amazing tonal range and "it plays like butter". I have never bought a new guitar that didn't need adjusting and that includes my son's $5000.00 PRS swamp ash (gold hardware bird / inlay) model. You will not be disappointed with this guitar or the value you get for the price. Oh yeah I used the Zzound's price match utility and saved an additional $171.21 . 66 years old and still rockin!

This beautiful Gretsch G5420T in black Is an all around great guitar for surf, rockabilly, rock, country, and jazz. I love playing Jazz-Rock with a sometimes almost latin feel. I don't think that this guitar is a metal-djent worthy guitar but works great for just about everything else though. Thank You ZZOUNDS!!!

"An Odd Mixture"

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
There are some good and not so good issues with this guitar, and after a year, I'm still wondering if I made the right buy. This is my second Electromatic--the first had an intermittent pick up. This one came with a missing truss rod cover and a pegged bridge that had to be moved a full quarter inch because it was never set up properly. If you get one, make sure it's set up by experts first, because otherwise, you'll be doing it later. The sound is good and it has plenty of output. I use it for jazz standards, blues, country and old rock, and the Bigsby works well on surfing on and old fifties songs. Tuning is an issue with this as it tends to shift once it's played and gets warmer from body heat. Also, tuning a string is sometimes painful (G string in particular) because after being adjusted, the strings tend to continue to move a bit. It looks like Gretsch tried to carefully cut the difference between cost and sound and were not (though mostly) successful. If you buy this for the tone, you won't be unhappy. It does happen to be a but finicky on tuning, but I owned a Fender Strat ultra and that puts everything else to shame in that category. If you get any kind of a deal with the Electromatic, it's a good deal. As with any gear, however, make sure the retailer will back you up when you buy it.

Musical Background:

I've played since 1965, primarily guitar, some keyboard, bass.

I played quite a few semi-hollow body guitars trying to figure out which one would be the next in my collection. Among all the ones I tried (did not try a Country Gentleman btw) the Gretsch 5420 sounded unique and filled my desire for a twangy rockabilly sound. I played it through a Vox amp at Guitar Center and it also got an awesome gritty sound. Now that I have it at home and have played it through a Fender Pro Reverb, I'm realizing there's not a big signal coming out of the pickups so not as easy to get that gritty sound on that amp. The finish is beautiful, the guitar is beautiful. The action was really low and although I haven't spent the time checking the intonation with a sensitive tuner, my ears are telling me that it's pretty good right out of the box. I'm very excited because this is the least expensive guitar in my collection by a good stretch yet it is beautiful and a blast to play. It's going to be one of my favorites. I think to sum up the guitar, I'd say that those who are looking at it should already be aware of the type of tone it will produce and it does that spectacularly. Although I tried the guitar out at Guitar Center, they didn't have the Aspen Green color which I liked, so I ended up buying one from zZounds. Great price and the guitar came a couple of days later without a hitch. I was a little hesitant to buy from zZounds because I haven't heard of them too much and the price of the Gretsch was really low compared to other outlets (even better than Guitar Center's Memorial Day pricing). I know this is supposed to be a review of the guitar, but since I'm reviewing on zZounds, I wanted to share my experience with others out if this was their first time trying them out.

I have had many guitars in my life but never one like this. The action and playability of this guitar is second to none. I don't play guitar for a living so the pickups provide all the drive I need or want. I have not needed support but all the reviews I have seen give it top marks. The overall quality, fit and finish are top notch. And yes it does give me that great "Gretsch Sound" even through a small amp.

If you are like me and have always wanted that Gretsch sound, this guitar is for you. For me, it's the sound of Buffalo Springfield. That lonesome chime. It's beautiful and it's right here in this guitar. Of course Neil and Stephen were using White Falcons, so if you can afford one of those, by all means get yourself one. But for the rest of us who can't, this guitar holds up quite well. There have been some major upgrades to it from just a few years ago also. It now comes shipped with a fixed (or pinned) adjustomatic bridge. This is a huge improvement that makes life much easier. Just ask anybody with the older setup and they'll tell ya. As far as affordabillity goes, Zounds makes it too good to turn down with their payment plan. For under $100 a month you can have one of these beauties strapped around your neck at your next gig. I am way happy with this purchase!!!
