"The good,the bad,the Gibson…"

This is going to be a straight out of the box review.I’ll start with the “good” part. The first thing I noticed was the finish. The combination of the plain maple top and the cherry finish was very striking and attractive, very reminiscent of my 1966,ES 330.The neck is described as “chunky”…it’s not.I have little girl hands and I would put it comfortably between a ‘59 and a ‘60,that changes little as you move up the neck. The fretwork was okay, neither good nor bad, just in dire need of polishing. The modern style of ABR1 bridge, with conversion posts and top adjustment is handy.Surprisingly, the intonation was pretty good as well as the neck relief,it was very comfortable and playable without any issues.Unplugged, mine is very resonant and rings cleanly. Now,plugged in…it’s damned loud, for P-90’s and I’m talking about before you hit the boost switch, which is very affective. It’s a very usable and musical boost which has an internal trimmer pot to adjust it.Now the part I hate…the bad.The “noiseless”pickups are a bit noisy.I do thick they would be quieter,if it had a bridge ground wire! They drilled the hole but no ground wire. Next surprise…ground wire to the battery compartment was held on by imagination,I opened it once and had to solder it back on.The finish work on the fretboard is a bit too typical, with minor tool marks on the rosewood and binding.Mine is pretty heavy, which doesn’t bother me.It’s not heavy like my ‘78 Custom but it is hefty. My last real complaint is one that goes to nearly every Gibson that I own and it honestly aggravates the piss out of me.The finish work where the binding meets the top is excellent but where the binding meets the body…it’s crap.Gibson seems to be incapable of sanding a body to match the binding smoothly. The final judgment…for what it’s worth,it’s very “Gibson”.For me this means that with a little help,I believe it will be a great guitar.I know my irrational love of Gibson guitars is always a gamble…unless it’s an SG.
