Gibson Limited Edition Midtown Standard Traditional Electric Guitar (with Case)

The Midtown Standard features the best in both solid and hollowbody design. This flat-topped guitar yields rich, fat tone thanks to the Burstbucker pickups.

This is not my first Gibson Midtown instrument. I also have the Midtown bass that I bought back in 2013. Back to the NEW guitar, it arrived PLAYABLE! Beautiful finsh, the binding is really nice, and the Burstbucker pickups sound GREAT. The color is Pelham blue as with my bass, so I have a "matched set!" As with many Gibson instruments, it is a little heavy, but that's Gibson. I had to do very minimal setup, primarily because I upped the strings from .009 to .010, and later on may go to .011 (as with all of my other Gibson guitars). I love the non-carved, flat surfaces ... kind of a different concept from Gibson. The binding was well manicured as well. I ordered it on a late Thursday night and it arrive Saturday afternoon ... zZounds is great at moving things along. All in all, buy one. The price is VERY reasonable.

"Fantastic Find"

I've been wanting a jazz box ever since I started really learning to play with lessons from a true master several years ago. I've looked at the ES335, ES339, almost bought a Midtown Standard last year, but am glad I waited for this great deal. At just under $1,000, case included, this has to be the best deal in the Gibson guitar world. If you are where I was a year ago, forget it. Buy this, and be happy. You don't need anything else, period. Great build quality. Only had to adjust the intonation, and fantastic-sounding guitar with unbeatable natural sustain. The Burstbuckers are great pickups and work better than I thought they would in a jazz box. The Grover tuners do a fine job of staying in tune. The neck is very nice and playable, the body isn't too big or wide, and the tone is fantastic. It's one great-looking guitar that will do anything from Kenny Burrell to B.B. King, and everything in between. Equally adept at studio, stage, and practice, and virtually all styles of music. You could play in a symphony in the afternoon and a punk or metal band that same night, and not need another guitar. This is a true, no-limits guitar, and at a price point that is unbeatable. If you don't own a semi-hollow body, buy this one, and you'll wish you had bought one sooner. If you don't own a guitar and are thinking of getting started, buy this one, and you'll never need another one. It's that versatile, and that good of a deal. I love my Les Pauls, Firebird and SG, but this is the one guitar I'd keep if forced to get rid of the rest.

"Gibson Midtown Sunburst"

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
Received my Midtown 3 days ago. I figured a Gibson at this price was worth a shot given zZounds payment plans. I'd been sitting on a Midtown for about a year, and finally after some hemming and hawing decided it was worth a shot. Sight unseen scared me, but after reading reviews and learning about zZounds and Gibsons dedication to fixing any issues, I decided to pull the trigger. First off, out of the box, the guitar was immaculate. The case included a picture of the guitar on the inspectors table, nice touch. I'm led to believe it a picture of the guitar AFTER they pulled the G-Force tuner, for posterity or something. But whatever. Still, a nice touch. I was worried about shipping, but zZounds takes steps to ensure that the neighborhood won't know you have a Gibson, or what ever high priced brand you purchased sitting on your front porch for someone to walk home with. Once I pulled the guitar into my hands and got a feel for it acoustically, I was immediately impressed at the feel of the guitar. It feels a lot like my Les Paul, but with a bit more hum acoustically, (not in a bad way). I like that sort of feedback acoustically, as a player it lets me know a lot. It's definitely not a 335 like feel, but it gets it done. The Burstbuckers are way more than I'm used to. I'm a PAF guy, and the Burstbuckers have taken a bit of getting used to, but after plugging in I immediately found Stranglehold Tone, and Angus Tone didn't take much fiddling around to get to. I'm a blues guy, so I like that different for me. The treble was harshed up a bit, but I have worked through that. The flat body aspect takes a bit to get used to visually, reminds me of a Tele. Not a fan, but I get where Gibson is going here. My one great big gripe. Upon arrival the fret ends were terrible. After about the 5th fret they cut into my hand terribly. Upon further review it seems that the first 4 or 5 frets were expertly dressed, and the rest were only PLEKd or whatever it is they do now. I'm going to address this with zZounds and see what can be done to alleviate this. I don't think it requires a return, but maybe some warranty work from Gibson. A $1000 guitar shouldn't hurt your hands when you pick it up from the case. That's how bad the fret ends are on this guitar. I also have an issue with a slight transparency bleed from the G-Froce tuners that were put on the head stock prematurely by Gibson before the poly coat was fully dry. I now have a permanent imprint of the G-Forces patents and maker, similar to this.... https://reverb-res.cloudinary.com/image/upload/a_exif/v1439519437/rupnra9folokjw1pu1xj.jpg Honestly though, it's barely noticeable, and is just a small gripe on my part. I also have a couple intonation and fret buzz issues, but I expect that as its a mail order deal. The action is still there, and the neck looks perfect, as do the frets. Expect a setup on almost any of these guitars. This isn't a deal breaker. All in all, out of the box, the tone is there, and it's definitely a Gibson from that standpoint. However, the fret end problem is disappointing. I hope that it can be rectified, and I'm sure zZounds and Gibson will work with me to make sure it does. All in all, if you're on the fence about wanting something like this, take the plunge. This guitar has tons of potential and loads of "mojo". Just don't expect a $3k Gibson out of the box.
Sound
Easy. If you like rock and blues, you'll get there.
Features
You get what you need.
Ease of Use
Very easy to get the tones you want, as long as you understand how the usual Gibson 4 pot 3 pole switch setup works.
Quality
Quality. No worries about any of that.
Value
Great value.
Manufacturer Support
Not yet, but I expect top notch support.
The Wow Factor
Nope. It's a working mans axe.

First of all I Never Buy a Guitar without playing it , To me this is like buying a Car , But I have gone thru so many Guitars I figured I deserve a brand new never touched guitar that some 14 year old that been wacking off in the Store and dropped or what ever , So I got it out of the cast and immediately Changed the Strings since they do not use a Guild Locking method on the strings , I prefer my DR Pure Blues anyway , Plugged it in and started to play the whole Free For all album with this thing and I knew i had scored big , The workmanship ( picture included in the case ) that someone built this like it was their own guitar , Nice Fathers Day Gift I should add , It does sound like my Les Paul's and don't really hear the 339 or 335 sound Cuz I usually have the Boogie up to paint peel mode , Sounds like a really cool Les Paul and feels great , I got what I expected and no issues with the neck or fret work, Good Job Gibson
Sound
Sounds like a Les Paul and looks like a 339
Features
Its a Guitar with 4 knobs and two pick ups , That is all i need
Ease of Use
It Plays like a guitar worth 3 times as much
Quality
I would say I am very impressed , This is the best Guitar I have seen since my 07 SG , Gibson does hit home runs but you have to look for them sometimes
Value
This Price was set to the I can get this guitar and still eat , That's what counts , So I feel it was a 3x win all around
Manufacturer Support
Never had to call ,
The Wow Factor
Did not get it for any WOW factor , It is build and made really well , I am Stoked

"Gibson Limited Edition Midtown Standard - Pelham Blue"

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
A very good guitar out of its case (included). I did not have to set up the guitar or adjust anything other than the standard Gibson pickup selector toggle switch, volume and tone knobs.
Sound
The sound is very unique for a "classic-looking" LE Midtown guitar. I can get any classic and modern tones out this guitar and I do not see the need for coil splits. The guitar is not a true semi-hollow guitar (routed out body) and that is what makes it so unique because it could sound as a solid body as well as a hollow body.
Features
The neck is thinner than those in my Les Pauls. It feels like I have owned this guitar for years and not for a few months.
Ease of Use
Very easy to play and get used too. It is easier to play than my Les Pauls and SG.
Quality
The Pelham Blue finish is beautiful but the guitar could have been sanded better so not to see rough grain through nitrocellulose coat. The black case is not that great though- its missing one latch at back and the stenciled 'Gibson USA' logo looks cheap and rushed. Come on Gibson, really? The controversial 'E-Tuners' where gone and in place it was delivered with Grover tuners. I haven't found any marks or scratched left after the E-tuners were removed.
Value
I can live with the minor quality issues because I bought this guitar from zZounds for close to $1,000.00 in comparison to the original manufacturer's suggested price of about $1,300.00. I am paying my LE Midtown through their 12 Payments, zero Interest option.
Manufacturer Support
I had some quality and delivery issues with Gibson and zZounds in the past but so far I haven't had any problems with this instrument. I just keep it in its case when not playing it.
The Wow Factor
The WOW Factor is still there- It is a Gibson after all. The legendary head stock, the smaller, semi-hollow-like but proportioned body of an ES 335 and the matched Burstbuckers 1 & 2 pick-ups; confirmed I bought a very good instrument. People that have seen me playing this guitar can not stop complementing on how beautiful it looks - The Pelham Blue finish truly stands out and I am sure the Ebony and Vintage Sunburst finishes are just as beautiful. I waited more than a year to own this guitar and I was finally able to afford it when zZounds lowered prices. Thank you.

"A Lot of Guitar for the Money"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
I previously owned a Gibson Midtown with gold hardware and a floating bridge. It was a really nice guitar, but a little too gaudy for my taste. When I saw this one it was perfect for me. Chrome hardware and a fixed tailpiece are more suited to my rock'n'roll taste. The finish on this guitar is not flawless when you look at it up close, but that should be expected in this price range. Specifically the neck just looks rushed, but the top looks fantastic in the blue finish. Playability was great right out of the box, but I will probably have it setup with a lower action soon. The hard case it comes with is nice, but not too flashy. Overall, this is just a great guitar for this price. I can't think of any other model or company offering anything close to this price range that is still American made. I have been a loyal Fender guy for twenty years, but their prices just keep going up, while the quality goes down. Gibson has a lot of budget friendly offerings that are still professional quality guitars.

"Midtown Madness!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
If you are reading this review it means zZounds may still have some of these badboys left, and if you ever wanted to get a Gibson semi but cant afford the 3G price of a 335 or 339, here is US made nitro-finished case-included option at one third the price well worth considering. It will give you much, but not all of the tones of a true laminate semi and all of the tones of a chambered les paul while putting in your hands one of the sweetest looking guitars Gibson has made. The Midtown is at once classic and modern, it honestly looks like a 3G Gibson thanks to the higher end details of mother of pearl logo (not sprayed like on fadeds), gloss finish (not the cheaper satin) and a color choice that includes ebony, Pelham blue and vintage sunburst (not the basic stained wood choices of the lower end LPs and SGs). I chose vintage burst partly because it gives the illusion of an arched top to these sleek flat top guitars. The Midtown has the full Gibson four knob electronics, not the two knob configuration of lower end 339 and 335 Studios, which cost more than the Midtown. It doesn't have the traps, just dots, but I like that better on this model as it emulates the look of 335s all the more and honestly, it has enough bling already. Mine came in very nice playing condition, I lowered the action a little and that's it. It had a slight blemish on the more visible left side of the headstock but zZounds worked that out with a credit, they are that awesome. They would have exchanged it at their expense but a bird in the hand..... These 2015s have Grovers not gforces, which is definite plus to the typical Midtown customer, who is very likely to be a bluesy jazzy player with a rock edge who KNOWS HOW TO TUNE A GUITAR lol. Lastly, the 12 pay plan can allow anyone to afford a great guitar but these are not in current production and regular price for Midtowns had been midteens. get while the gettins good.
Sound
it will do everything up to the doorway of full airy 335 tones, my experience with 335s is with Epiphones model, not Gibsons, so to my ears the pickupsd sound way better than Epis, and I'm not looking for the full airiness of 335s, but I was looking for...and found...the LP with more resonance and "sing" than my Gibson LPs. This will likely be my main guitar as time goes by.
Features
best feature is its size. Tho I like and want a 339, they look kind of ridiculous in a large persons hands, you look like a giant playing one. I'm not that big, only 5'9", but 335s look enormous on me, the size of the Midtown looks and feels just right. Ill still get s 339 soon, but thanks to the Midtown, ill be be more than happy with the Epi when a used one comes along for under three bills. The Midtown does not have the flavor of the month features...robotuning and coiltapping. I have teles, strats and a p90 SGs for that. Hardshell case is a GREAT feature. Gibson is awesome for including gig bags in lower priced models and most makers give you nothing. A genuine Gibson hard shell case is fantastic...that's two bills of value right there.
Ease of Use
Not applicable, however ease-wise there is a alot less stress jamming with these than a 3G or 4G Gibson for obvious reasons. Midtowns look and play like a million but cost under a thousand.
Quality
Minor blem on mine, zZounds worked it out with me. Thank you zZounds!
Value
At a G this is the best value Gibson guitar I have ever come across for sale new.
Manufacturer Support
Gibson not the easiest to get ahold of, but once you do get through they take care of you. I needed some parts replaced on previous Gibsons and they shipped them. There is also authorized warranty service in my vicinity and most parts of USA.
The Wow Factor
unbelievable good looking and cool...the white binding really makes it pop tho I would have preferred aged binding, a bit less white.

This first guitar i received from zzounds had and issue. Right where the fret board met the head stock i noticed there were a couple of hairline fractures where the fret board met the head stock. In fact, on the right side it looked like the fret board was beginning to separate from the neck. I quickly notified zZoundds customer service and they were extremely helpful as to help me return my guitar to get another one. They quickly sent out a pre-paid UPS label. Once my guitar was packed I took it to my local UPS shipping center and it took about two minutes to scan it and go on my mary way. However the second I received had and issue as well. The nut had a crack in it from the "G" string all the way to the high "E". I notified zZounds about this, and was assured that if I took it to an authorized Gibson repair place, they would quickly fix the issue at no cost to me. To my surprise that all took place and it went very smooth. due to great customer service I would definately do business with zZounds again and let my friend know as well. Five stars for your great service zZounds....
Sound
This guitar is a semi hollow body with burst bucker 1 & 2 pickups. So far the sounf is outstanding in my book as played through a Marshal DSL40C
Features
Gibson really put together a nice sounding guitar. It can handle most music depending on how you have the settings on your amp or pedals.
Ease of Use
To get the sound I like it took a bit of tweaking but only for about maybe 20-30 min. Very easy to dial in the sound you want.
Quality
This guitar seems to be made to handle all kind of music which means to me that the quality is spot on.
Value
The value of the product is in my opinion outstanding despite the first couple of issues I had. I got to learn first hand how Gibson would respond to warranty work. They did not dissapoint.
Manufacturer Support
The only manufacturer support i sued so far was to get the nut fixed which was a breeze. So glad =to see Gibson stand behind their product.
The Wow Factor
To me the color of the guitar is the best part. Next I need the pelham blue bass they sell lol

Nice looking guitar, played pretty nice. But all of the screws holding on the electronics cover were so crooked they were diagonal. Really the worst I've ever seen. Also the glue on the neck joint showed through. I could live with the glue but not the screws tearing up my shirts. Customer service at zZounds took care of everything with the return. I didn't wanna get another one with the same issues so I ended up going with a Gibson Firebird, and it is finished perfectly.

"Real Glossy Gibson Goodness At A Great Price"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
This is a real Gibson- glossy nitro finish, binding, quality hardware, good pickups. It's a real Gibson for the price of the satin finished low end ones that are everywhere. The finish was perfectly smooth (Pelham Blue), with no drips, runs, or orange peel. The fretwork was excellent, and the guitar was set up nicely with low action.
Sound
This guitar sounds like a quality Gibson. The pickups are Burstbucker 1&2, which are unpotted PAF style humbuckers. The pots and caps are improvements over what Gibson used in the past. I've played it through several amps of various types and didn't get a bad tone out of it anywhere. I got the typical Gibson humbucker tones out of it, but it seemed a lot brighter than I expected, which i prefer anyway. There is no muddiness in the neck pickup. It has more sustain than a typical 335 style, but a little more air than ya solid body. Nothing in this price range can touch it.
Features
There are no unusual control or hardware features on this Gibson. It's got the typical 2 volume/2 tone control arrangement. It's got Grover machine heads, not the auto tuners, so no issues there. It would have been nice to have coil split on the pots- I may make that modification at some point. What is unusual on this Gibson is the construction of the body. There are no laminates in the body as you would see on a typical 335 style guitar. The back of the body is made from hollowed out solid mahogany. The top is made from solid maple and is flat, not arched. This is not an arched top guitar. Because the top is flat there is not much room to put a wiring harness through the f-holes. That's why there is an access panel on the back- to wire up the pots and caps in the guitar. If you like to play around with different pickups/pots/caps this will make your life easier.
Ease of Use
If you're used to Gibson guitars, or to the typical Gibson pickup/control configurations, you will have no issues with playing this guitar. It sounds great, and will do pretty much any style of music. It sounds great through every amp that I tried it with so far- Fender Hot Rod Deville 212, Peavey Classic 30, Peavey Vypyr 2 modeling amp, Carving Vintage 16, and a 1965 Fender BandMaster.
Quality
My Midtown was flawless right out of the box. The finish is perfect, with no flaws or cracks anywhere. The frets are nicely finished. The setup was perfect right out of the box with low action. All I did was tune it up and play it. All of the components are high quality. I don't forsee any major issues with this guitar.
Value
This guitar is an absolute steal. If you get a good one you will have a nice glossy nitro finish, and high quality hardware for a great price. Mine looks great, sounds great, plays great, and I don't think that there is anything out there that can touch it for the money.
Manufacturer Support
I've never had to deal with Gibson for a defective product in 50 years of playing. If you know what you're looking at you should be able to pick out a decent guitar. The only times that i've contacted Gibson was for information, and they were very helpful.
The Wow Factor
The Pelham Blue metallic finish is certainly a wow factor. The real wow factor is in the quality and tones that you get for under $1k.
