OK. Here's the skinny on the 2i2. The preamp is amazing for this price point. Good luck finding a better one even in the $500 audio interface range. Yeah I mean that seriously. It is velvety smooth and extremely quiet... but, you will need an attenuator for active pickups. Buy a cheap $20 inline attenuator if you don't already have one because otherwise you'll clip the input stage. Even a single coil will clip fairly easy. Not sure why they didn't include a pad but you have been warned. If you're playing humbuckers, forget it! You'll clip with the gain all the way down unless you turn down the volume on your guit. Other than that it's a sweet lil interface. The Scarlett suite too is excellent. Plugins don't usually impress me but these did. The reverb plugin is now my goto reverb. It sounds lush, warm and gorgeous like an analog verb. They're not real surgical plugs but they really don't need to be because they sound so good. Obviously you won't be buying this for flexible routing, but for $149 this is one sweet sounding interface.

"Best sounding preamps!"

When my Presonus Firebox stopped working after upgrading to Mavericks, I had an excuse to search for a new audio interface. I'm glad I did! I had a bit of trouble getting it to work initially, as the driver that loads automatically isn't compatible in some way -- I could hear sound upon playback but could not record. You must delete the driver from the Library and run the interface in class-compliant mode in Mavericks. There is a lot of advice on this in the Focusrite forums. Now that it is working it is flawless! Levels are so easy to set and the sound of the preamps is so warm and clean. I liked the Presonus but the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 blows it away. I couldn't be happier!

"Perfect Portable Interface! "

A few months back I was looking to build out a portable recording rig with my new MacBook Pro. I was looking for a high quality audio interface that wouldn't put me in the poorhouse. Having already owned the Saffire Pro 40 in my desktop studio rig, I was already familiar with the Focusrite brand. The Scarlett 2i2 did NOT disappoint. The device installed easily and works flawless with my MacBook pro in both Pro Tools 9 and Presonus Studio One 2. I've tracked both 1/4in and XLR and the focusrite preamps delivery quality sound. The bus powered USB device even draws enough juice to provide phantom power to my vocal condensor- which I loved. I routinely jack my guitar direct into the Scarelett for use with Guitar Rig or other amp modeling software. I know some other folks reviewing this said you would need a signal attentuator to keep the guitar signal from peaking out. What I've found is that you flip the switch from INST to LINE and that solves that issue immediately. I haven't needed any additional signal attentuator- and I'm running guitars with active pickups. Overall, EXCELLENT PRODUCT! The only issue I had was with installing the Scarlett Plug-in Suite. The CD jacket was missing the activation code for the plugins. The great folks at ZZounds were able to get me over to the Focusrite support team and they generated a new code for me! Problem solved.

"Quality home recordings with moderate-beginner's experience"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This is my first audio interface and I haven't had a single problem. I've been using it for the past couple months with my MacBook Pro, two MXL condenser mics that require phantom power, and (mostly) the GarageBand daw. So far, I've recorded acoustic and electric guitar and bass, ukulele, and vocals. Everything sounds much better than I anticipated. I'm not a tech expert and I've found the audio interface to be very intuitive, both to install and setup as well as during recording sessions. Note that you will need a 3.5mm-to-1/4" adapter if you plan on using standard headphones.

For value, it is just the best. Low noise, great detail pretty much transparent, clean sound with plenty of gain--and it is nice looking too. The next step up would be into a different class of interface/pres: the $500-$800 range

"Great starter Audio Interface/Recording Software SUCKS"

It is a no brainer to install. I cannot give a high five though on the recording software that is included. Ableton Live Lite 8 in my opinion sucks. I suggest either using Audacity which is a free download or Mixcraft 5. I personally like Mixcraft 5 because it is VERY user friendly and I have already made some very nice recordings using it.

"Latency"

I am no expert and new to digital but their is a gap when recording multitracks and I read its because of MME as opposed to the better ASIO. I had to guess at 140 ms shift to locate the start of a new track. Now shouldnt MME be part of the desciption if this much gap is their? Im taking it back

I tried using this thing with FL Studio and was going through the new features including playing back the "New Stuff" track, everything stuttered, even from dropping the latency from 32m to 6m, I was surprised it was that high in the first place but from researching this thing is not good bet
