I had an old 16 channel Mackie and a Presonus Studio Live that just werent cutting it then the presonus died and I needed a new interface I settled on the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 for the number of mic pres as I track drums as well as other instruments this red box of beautiful magic makes our tracks and my clients tracks sound amazing even with cheaper mics these mic pres deliver the clarity and depth you want in a fgood recording session then you add in the software Focusrite makes available to you and its a no brainer Focusrite for the win

I'm Lov'in It! After a week or so of some serious test run jamming with a seriously low 3.9 mssec roundtrip latency recording @ 24 bit/96k/Hz with SONAR X3 Producer, I have found absolutely nothing "not" to love about the new Gen 2 18i20. The very name Focusrite has always been synonymous with great quality, reliability, and legendary sound quality, and this is no exception. But that’s exactly what I expected out of Focusrite, because it’s been proven to me all so many times before, if it’s Focusrite it will “WORK” as expected. :o) And what is most exceptional about my whole experience with purchasing my new Scarlett 18i20 Gen 2 is the most exceptional service here at zZounds, and the fact that my shipment arrived the very next day after placing the order was the first shock of mind boggling super low latency I experienced that day, that will indeed stay with me forever. Thank You zZounds, I love your super nice zero interest “Play as you Pay” terms as well. :o))

"Great audio interface"

I upgraded from the 2i4 and I couldn't be happier. I have a bunch of analog synths connected to the 8 preamps which each show up individually as inputs in my DAW exactly as I expected. I created a template in my DAW so the input assignments are already made each time I fire it up. Standalone is great too, sometimes it's nice to just go dawless, or computerless which could not be done with the 2i4.I've had the 2i4 1st gen (dropped it), 2i4 2nd gen (which is now a spare) and now the 18i20 2nd gen and have always been extremely satisfied in regards to their audio interfaces.

Musical Background:

I usually just jam at home with synths and/or a daw.

I'm very happy with the performance. I had a bit of lag time while using my old MacBook Pro but once I switched to my new iMac there was no latency at all. I was able to record live jams while achieving a studio quality sound.

"Outstanding for the price!"

I'm blown away by the quality and features of this amp! No regrets and now I see why focusrite is so popular!
Sound
Preamp are plenty powerful and very clean at high gain on lowly CAD tom mics, which I used in a rush to demo this thing as a guitar amp mic lol, on a tube amp and emg loaded guitar. Considering the weak and eager attempt the results were impressive!
Features
Comes with more than enough software to start and point you to more if you're new and feel the need to build up a plugin collection. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. Cannot be beat for the price!
Ease of Use
It's a simple interface that leaves the options to you, I was able to achieve 8ms latency and get a recording with no funny business in Ableton 9. The front LEDs show less signal strength than Ableton, could be good or bad depending on context and needs. Expandability is seriously awesome with the Octopre, and the headphone/monitor mix is no nonsense!
Quality
Metal construction, beautiful red brushed aluminum on the top, it's a shame to rack mount it. Knobs and buttons are heavy and confident as well as the solid click when inserting cables. It has some weight to it too.
Value
You can't beat the quality, features, and price. This is the trifrcta.
Manufacturer Support
Focusrite wants you to register your product to streamline support and I'm not against it. Doing so unlocks your free plugins and is probably better than any other equipment I've purchased.
The Wow Factor
Coming from an Akai EIE Pro and basic recordings of jam sessions, I feel like all the potential is now reality. With decent, similar tier mics, relatively speaking, this unit will help you produce respectable recordings of jam and albums alike. For the home studio or band project, there's nothing better!

After listening to all of the rants and raves about this interface, I decided to sell my Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL and buy this interface. Well, one of my clients bought it as payment. Everything was going OK for the first few minutes until I started setting up defaults for the routing IE system playback such as YouTube and other video hosting sites would automatically route to outputs 3 and 4 while my DAW would automatically be routed to 1 and 2. I also had a hard time setting up output 5 and 6 for the headphone amplifier in the tracking room. I finally got that done but still could not get the default system playback to outputs 3 and 4 so I had to just deal with it. The other problem I have which did not occur to me for a few hours because I did not recognize it right away were pops and clicks just watching YouTube videos or listening to music through Google Play. I had clicks and pops on system audio... I finally got to use the interface for recording a few days later. I was getting audio dropouts. My CPU was only at 4% under load. I have a custom built computer with and 8 core processor clocked at 4.4Ghz, SSD hard drives, 32GB of high frequency RAM so there is no way I should be experiencing any dropouts. I never had this problem with Presonus, Tascam, M-Audio. I couldn't find answers online so I emailed Focusrite for this problem. Basically, they had me download software to tell us how much resources everything is using and nothing was high. They had me lower the clock speed on my CPU to 3.5Ghz. Nothing was working. Then they told me to lower my clock speed, update the BIOS, update nVidia drivers, and if there are still pops and clicks, to send them a video. I will be returning this and get the Presonus Studio 192.

"Nice features, so-so sound"

I bought this for its number of inputs and flexible routing options. I like those features very much, especially the easy configuring of different monitor mixes and the ability to add mic pres via spdif and adat. But the sound is not in the same league as my RME Babyface. I find the monitor output on the 18i20 to be cloudy and lacking in audible frequency range compared to my Babyface. I would never mix using the monitor out from the 18i20, instead I use a Mytek converter patched to the spdif outs of the 18i20. After having the interface for a couple of months now, I have decided to use the 18i20 as an outboard adat 8-pre with my Babyface. That way, I have a couple of decent channels of conversion going into the DAW and have much better sound through the monitors. The 18i20 is just fine as an adat add-on pre unit, but I must admit that I have been spoiled by listening to good converters and the 18i20 is just not quite there for me in that regard. Also, the mix control software has a habit of not thinking that the hardware is connected. This often requires cycling the unit off and on, which is a bit of a PITA when it happens when trying to record a track. I have also experienced odd pops and clicks occasionally when recording.

"Odd build quality choices"

Overall: 2 out of 5 stars

I purchased this unit looking to replace my older 2i4 unit. It looks solid out of the box, performs as expected and seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. A few days in I noticed that the screen had a smudge on it, so I took my cotton shirt sleeve and tried to clean it off. It left small scratches. Confused, I made sure that there wasn't a protector over it (I had already removed the obvious one from the factory). I lightly ran a fingernail over it and realized to my horror that even light pressure had gouged the cheap plastic window in front of the readout. I've bought tons of equipment and gadgets over the years and never seen such a poor choice for a covering like that. Really odd considering the rest of the product seems rock solid. I'll be chasing down Focusrite to see what they can do, but be warned it's not what I expected from this company. The material is actually made such that the scratches make the readout difficult to see in lots of lighting conditions. Bravo.

Well, I have spent two days trying to optimize my computer to eliminate the noise produced when using this interface but I have had no luck. I eliminated drop out and popping but there is constant crackle so I'll see if I can find something else that works I guess...
