Fender PJ Mustang Electric Bass

With its 30" scale, this Mustang Bass seems tailor-made for players of smaller-stature. The P and J Bass pickups create huge tones that defy the bass' size.

"A discontinued bass with rosewood fretboard, now my favorite (after mods)."

Thankfully, I purchased this bass in Nov. 2017 when still in production with the rosewood fretboard. It is beautiful.Production quality was having a siesta, so I have made some needed modifications. In the order in which they occurred:1. Initial Truss rod and intonation (to determine what I really had here).2. Peek under the hood to see electronics and determine why 3-way switch crackled.3. Fret dressing, including removing prevalent side burrs. Sanded carefully.4. Nut was cut wrong, and low E was dragging low. New 1.5"Jazz Bass nut installed.5. Fender 9050 Flatwound strings installed.6. Replaced standard bridge with Hipshot KickAss4. Added short screw for low E.7. Chrome cupcake control knobs installed.8. Copper foil shielding in control cavities and underneath the pickguard.9. Changed out stock pickups to Aguilar hum-cancelling P/J set.10. Changed out noisy stock 3-way selector switch to Switchcraft for the win! Thanks. Love this bass.

"A Nice Guitar"

So, I used to be an authorized technician for Fender, Martin, Taylor, Gibson etc etc.. I have literally worked on thousands of guitars, although not lately because I work as an engineer in the audiovisual industry these days. Here are my observations of this guitar, having also owned a 2005 CIJ Mustang in the recent past. Here is what I found with what is a very nice guitar: 1. The nut needs replacing because I can see by siting it that the spacing between the E and A string is wider than the other strings. Only really noticeable in the first position of course. 2. The fret ends need to be sanded smooth. Use 400 grit, 600 then finish with 1500 for a nice buff. It is pretty bad but a simple fix. 3. The intonation was out by a mile (really about 3/8" sharp). They were all off by the same measure, not sure how someone managed that. 4. The neck requied a slight adjustment, it has a bit too much relief in it. 5. The frets on the bass side past the octave require a light spot fret mill. There is a slight rise in the fingerboard. I will do light a fret mill touching all frets and then calculate how much should be taken from the bass side past the octave. Looking for a slight decline in their profile. Otherwise, the neck is pretty straight. I plan to replace the bridge with w string thru type and probably the pickups and pickguard too. I will say that while the CIJ Mustang has more of Jazz Bass feel to the neck (skinny at the nut), the PJ Mustang plays more like a P-Bass.

"Great Bass!"

Another great zZounds transaction. Out of the box my bass was set up next to perfect. Everything is straight and aligned properly. The finish on both the neck and body is without blemish. This is a great sounding and playing bass as well. The neck feels especially fast with the satin finish. Compared to my CIJ Mustang it's similar in feel but different in tonal capability. Overall Fender did a great job with cost vs quality on this model. If you're a serious player like me just trying to give your hands a rest, or at a beginner level who's willing to spend some extra cash on your first instrument, this bass is for you. I'll replace the pickups with USA models eventually but the set it comes with are more than fine for general use in any genre. If you're looking for a short-scale bass it doesn't get much better than this folks. Get one before Fender discontinues the Mustang Bass again for the fifth time.

"Awesome short scale bass"

I bought my Mustang PJ Bass because it looked good and the video reviews seemed positive. When I took it out of the box I noticed that the fit and finish were perfect. The string height was set at the factory and was dead-on for the way I like my strings. I did have to spend a few minutes with my tuner setting the intonation, but other than that everything else on the bass was exactly right. The bass is well balanced and lighter weight than my other short scale basses. I've learned that a good indicator of sound and build quality is to balance a bass on your leg and pluck a string. If you feel the entire bass vibrate from headstock to endpin then it was built correctly and should sound good if the pickups do their job. There is a bit of single coil hum from the pickups, but that's just normal with any single coil system. I may eventually change the pickups out for some EMG Classics just to get rid of that hum, but for now I will just play it as is. The only other modification is that I am putting strap locks on this bass.Bottom line is that this is a good quality short scale bass at a good price point.

The bass plays nice and sounds great, but it came with a broken saddle piece for the E that I had to replace with a standard bass because I couldn't find one.

Broken saddle that I've yet to hear back about.
