I've had the 6l6 iconic and it was great but this el34 has a tiny bit more kick, The gain is off the roof, you can play anything from Metallica to KISS it is truly a beast One thing I did dislike about this amp is it is a great amp but for the "brown sound" the iconic was marketed for is just not there but regardless it is still a amazing amp

"Not just for Metal"

I bought this amp because I was looking for a combo with a closed back. I don't play anything close to EVH, but had read some great reviews of this amp and because I play in a hard rock band (LZ, Cream, Alice Cooper, Allman Bros., Rush, The Who, Ten Years After, etc) my Blues Junior just was not cutting it for the guitar tone I need in that band. The first thing I'll say about this amp, is IT'S HEAVY. Be prepared to put casters on it or a flight case with casters. Soundwise, it checks all the boxes for me. Yep, Channel 2 is monsterous. The saturated tone is almost impossible to tame. This amp really requires a guitar with humbuckers or you'll experience an insane amount of noise. It has a gate knob on it, but even all the way up it does little to control the noise of channel 2. Channel 1 is a whole different beast. I do need clean tones pretty often, and the cleans are surprisingly good. A couple things contribute to this IMO. First, it's built by Fender, so it has that pedigree, Second, it had a pair of EL34's, which the Blues Junior also sports. Overall, this amp does what I need it to do. It gets nice and clean, yet also gets that insane saturated EVH tone when needed. The boost switch when playing the clean channel gives just enough boost for those times when you need a clean solo which I really like. And I love the Resonance and Presence controls. I highly recommend this amp for those needing a high gain amp, but also cleans up nicely. If you're looking for pure EVH, you're probably better off with the 5150 Amp Head and Bottom, but this is definitely not a one trick pony. It covers everything I need it to and more.

"I HATE IT"

What a waist of money. It's a tube amp that you can't overdrive. Read that again. You have to use their crappy settings. The lack of depth and prominent treble sounds like Radio Shack. I'll pay zZounds. Always do but I'll sell it for whatever, just to get rid of it. Still haven't found the "brown sound". It's a one trick pony and the trick was on me for spending $900 on this piece of crap.
