this is the best head i have ever used on a bass drum.i use it without the muffling ring and it sounds great. no need for pillows or any other kind of muffling.if i record i will install one of the muffling rings that are supplied with the head.i also use a ported reso head or sometimes unported. this is just my opinion and taste.
