I like EQD and was drawn to the Rainbow Machine due to its unusual sounds and cool graphics. I’ve read reviews that sing its praises and others that dismiss it as a novelty and I understand both sides. It makes some interesting sounds, but it does take time and finesse to make it work musically. I think EQD should really have more instructional material available for this pedal. The sound clips on their site are awesome, but it’s not clear how to recreate them. I now just look for images of this pedal on peoples rigs and set mine up that way and see how it sounds.

There’s so many ways to approach using Rainbow Machine, from its chorus and delay like effects, to the amazing magic knob. The flexi-switch foot switches are fantastic for temporarily introducing in the magic effect and taking it away effortlessly for control over the effect. It’s pedals like Rainbow Machine that really make EQD the place I go to for creative inspiration

Bought this initially because I saw Mike Stringer talk on his Rig Rundown about how he uses it "set to stun" for the Spiritbox song Soft Spine, and I've been looking for ways to recreate that sound in my own rig. While this pedal definitely gets that sound, you can also get a really unique "modulating via delay" effect when placed in front of a distorted amp that's working for some heavy shoegaze-y stuff I'm working on. Still finding new ways to use it, and maybe one day I'll use it the way it's intended to be used.
