"tip to improve drums"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I least like the drums, most are not punchy, 808s and 909s dont measure, but this is good in some ways, i am scared to buy the expansion drum cards, for fear that they are no better.
Sound
LISTEN::: This machine has very good sound quality, maybe better than all the other beatboxes,(ive been through alot of them) but.. THE DRUM KITS ARE WEAK! and need EQ-ing for bass, they tend to be quiet and drowned out easily against the synths. **TIP** -The drums can be beefed up by tweeking with "deeper 4 highpass" filter,(cutoff-left, rez-right), & some pitching here and there if wanted for rap. Some kits lose snares and hats, on certain filters. I route drums to my DP/4 through the XL's sub/insert outputs. The usual(rev, del, etc) fx, are good but the distortion could be better Some cheesy patches, but some interesting sounds by manipulation. The synths are fairly nice, some crispness or bite, some good basses . As with all machines, other gear is needed to add differant flavors The demos are slow and boring and certainly do not show its potential. The RM1X is very thin sounding when compared. (from what i remeber the quasimidi 309,and the MC 505 are comparable for sound quality, but they just dont match the XL-7 as an external sequencer).
Features
TWO MIDI OUTS, A&B, and two sets of 16 tracks, both for internal or external use, which is awsome for other gear, The EXTRA OUTPUTS serve as INSERTS and save on mixer channels. PADS are VELOCITY SENS,.. KNOBS and RIBBON are PROGRAMMABLE USB? i dont use it. i heard it doesnt work.? If it had a sampler, i would sell all my other gear. This machine seems to be very complex.. yet simple enough to pickup.
Quality
Built well, tough, the knobs arent half as cheap as some other gear. before os,2 my led display would stutter, and notes would stick, it crashed once but i didnt lose any work. i havent had problems or found any glitches since. not to say that there wont be any.
Value
its original price was way to high.
The Wow Factor
Appearance takes some getting use to, Possibly a better sequencer than the RM1X, each have their pros and cons, for edits or midi.

"Amazingly deep synthesis power, killer sequencer and a wealth of real time control make this the all in one box to beat."

I am keeping this one till all of its circuits are fried. Even if I were forced to sell every other piece of gear I own I would keep this.
Sound
The sounds on this module are absolutely phenomenal. Big fat basses, wonderful arpeggios, cutting leads, odd noise effects. Sound quality is exceptional, crisp and clear. The pads are responsive to velocity (although a bit stiff initially they break in nicely with use) and work nicely to allow expressive playing. On its own the XL7 sounds just fine and blends well with other synths.
Features
It does everything it claims and then some. This is a seriously deep instrument. The level of programability of the synth engine is staggering. Sounds can be layered and abused using a vast array of modulation sources and destinations. The sequencer is full featured and capable of handling any style of music you can imagine. You are not limited to a four four common time signature, any oddball signature you can come up with is fair game. Almost anything you want to control with this box can be controlled in real time.
Quality
Solid construction, seems like it would hold up well in the studio and on the road. Some of the buttons feel a little clicky, like they might not last, but I have not had any problems.
Value
At current prices this thing is a steal. Honestly, you could spend a lifetime learning to program the synth engine - it alone is woth the price of admission. With the sequencer and real time control aspects thrown in this is truly a bargin.
Manufacturer Support
Support seems excellent although I have not had any problems. Updates have come often since I purchased the machine, up to 2.0 currently.
The Wow Factor
This is a cool product, it looks different, very orange yellow. But don't buy it for its looks, buy it because it is a really nice piece of gear.
