I'm not replacing my unit, instead buying a multi-effect padal and separate pphasers, choruses and rotary effect. (I want a TC Electronic chorus, but they're pricey and a bit hard to find). i originally chose it for its tremolo effect, and the phase-chorus was interesting, if limited.
I wish that I'd realized how tricky controlling it would be om stage. i least liked the price, and i most liked the solid feel of the pedal, combined with its unique timbre.
Sound
I used to own one that was lost or stolen. It's well-built, although the bottom screws tended to turn loose. The sound was good, although it's lousy AS a rotary pedal; it doesn't emulate or equal a Leslie. The phasy, lush-layered chorus is good, and the tremolo (not vibrato0 effect has its appeal. The unit would be much better if it ran stereo ins and outs, and the output could have a souped-up 3-dimensional sound option. It could also be redesigned to operate as a panner, front-to back and side to side- how about up and down, for 3-D? It's appropriate for pop-rock, even a country pedal steel giutar (which i do not play) could benefit from its tone coloration. it's a better "live" pedal than a studio tool, partly because it's a bit too noisy- too much aliasing relative to the effect's output.
Features
The product included no accessories- a drag; they omitted an adapter, and didn't even ship it with a 9v battery (which it eats like crazy!) they should design this to run on phantom power from the source/input.
The most useful feature to me was the chorus sound. the tremolo was alright. It would go nicely with a wah effect! The chassis is metal, a tank of a pedal, with a rubber foot pad on top and rubber feet which hold the bottom battery compartment screws. The metal's prone to scratch very visibly, so pamper it or accept that the pedal will soon look very beat-up. a matte finish plastic would be a better choice.
Ease of Use
It's easy to get a few sound variations out of this, although the location and function of the tremolo rate wheel was a bit unhelpful- it takes practice to use this, especially "live". the small button for the chorus sound is too small, difficult to access, and unresponsive. It's all right as far as its manual goes. I wouldn't purchase it again, but i would use one occasionally. It gives electric piano, clavinet and synth/ethnic sounds new zip.
Quality
It's well-made, with an appealing finish and fit, no cheapness or sad compromises were made. The finish scratches easily, though. It's reliable. It can be used in a road rig, but carry two of them for stereo, or as a backup.
The worst aspect of the quality is the noisiness of the chorus sound, and the accessibility of the controls is pretty questionable.
Value
No, its price relative to other products is a weakness. If one wants a phaser and/or chorus pedal, other inexpensive products are superior , and the same goes fot the tremolo effect. As for leslie effect- vibrato/tremolo, i'm going with an inexpensive Behringer pedal that's MUCH cheaper, pocketing the savings for more effects.
Manufacturer Support
No, i haven't dealt with Dunlop. My only trouble with the unit while it was under warranty was my own fault- I opened the bottom plate so that i could access the 9v battery lead easier. the cord to the battery wore after a while, but it continued to work. I repaired it myself, just passably. (to have had it professionally repaired would have easily equalled the cost of the unit!)
The Wow Factor
The color's good, with attractive finish, and it feels solid and comfortable under my feet, a Volvo station wagon of a pedal!
