I own the 1st Katana Go with the big knob on the front. It's the same exact thing as this new version (minus the knob of course) and I didn't have a chance to review it before it was discontinued for looking too much like the Mustang Micro.First things first; the factory presets are good. But there's a whole other world of presets available through the Tone Studio app. I found a set of 30 called JoeRock:Go and they're the only ones I play now. They're separated by 3 categories- Clean, Crunch, and Brown/Lead, and they're phenomenal. All patches use either Boss pedals or in some cases a Klon ('Clean: Klon' is my go-to preset). Honestly it's worth the cost of the Katana Go just to have access to that preset pack. The unit itself is pretty sturdy. It's plastic but not fragile. Mine has seen extensive use and it's still in like-new condition. The buttons have a nice firm feel to them, the slider switch to power on the unit is nice and firm. No complaints at all with build quality. I play mine with a $8 set of Skullcandy earbuds and the sound is great. I could talk about the Katana Go all day but if you're looking for a great headphone amp with a lot of options, that can also be used as a powerful practice tool and a interface to boot, just buy it. You definitely won't be disappointed.

"Crazy Cool Game Changer for Practicing & Life!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I was desperate for practice but caught up with a roommate situation where she never leaves and my rig just sits because she gotta sleep 24/7. I got talked into buying a Spark Go and thought I had something but could not find any presets worth messing with. I found some packages of Tones tha can be bought using my phone and did that. But I use my iPad for the App for the Spark. Now I have to buy the same package of Tones to use them on iPad. Get on my Laptop and discover I gotta buy the same things again for ten times more if I want to play with more Tones. Long story short it can be $1000 worth of software to end up with usable Tones. Then I was looking on the zZounds Website and seen this. I installed the App that goes with it and explored all the Tone Exchange packages and no extra cost! They are there for all of us to use. I was like no way! This is real! I bought the Katana Go 2 using the payment plan ( 4 payments ) because my Credit Card got out of control buying things for the Spark and freaking me out. Anyway I plug my open back Audio Technica 50’s in and slap the Katana Go 2 into my Revstar and am totally blown away! I had to turn the Volume way down. Really? With that Spark 100% Volume I was just getting it. This thing is loud! I don’t think I have even tried 100% Volume on it yet? Now the Tones themselves. Every single Preset is usable! I have hundreds of others to try but no need yet. I am still exploring the stock Presets. And I can tweak on it using any of my devices; not just one like the Spark ( unless you buy more packages ). Yeah, do yourself a favor and get one of these and an excellent pair of Headphones and prepare to be absolutely blown away! I can’t stop thinking about what life would be like had I one of these back in 1981 when I bought my first Electric Guitar? The first time I was ever shot at was for playing my Electric Guitar. I guess somebody didn’t want to hear it? But with this only you are going to hear its beautiful rich crisp clear Tone and the Rock Star in you is gonna be one happy Player. This thing is awesome! Thank you Roland & BOSS and zZounds for getting this thing into my hands. I can Jam again and my roommate can sleep her stupid life away in peace. Cheers
Sound
It is phenomenal as-is. I do wish it had the big dial like the Go 1 did though. However I find I tweak my Guitar Volume more than the Katana Volume when playing. With my big Headphones I have way more room to play with Volume never needing a full Volume yet. I am cranking it down more often then up. As far as looks go its looks sort of cheap. But once in your hands you realize it’s solid. It’s not a toy. This is real Pro Grade stuff. I feel a deep gratitude towards Roland for giving me this thing. Call me a BOSS Fantranny now.
Features
To be fair to keep the thing in this price range its about perfect as-is. I do wish it had the big dial like the Go 1 for some reason; though I rarely use that Volume wheel on it. I use my Guitar Volume for control. It does spin around and flip awful easy. But finding I can wedge my Headphone Cord under my Strap and keep it handy that way. I have no real complaints. I have a ton of praise. It’s crazy cool awesome!
Ease of Use
I honestly can’t find any Presets I don’t like. I have not found a need yet to use anything from Tone Exchange. I keep looking and thinking about it but get itchy to just want to get back to playing again instead of wishing. One day I will grab some. Until then I am glad they are there and plenty of them too; and they don’t cost me more money to use them either. Not like Positive Grid nickel and dimming me to freaking death.
Quality
Once in hand and realizing it’s solid I am confident that with care it will last a very long time. For the money I have got me a lot of Tools to work with. It’s like having $50,000 worth of Amps and Pedals in your room. I will be bummed when it does get broke or wrecked. How so who knows? Probably my Dog will eat it? But when that time comes I will have got my monies worth out of it.
Value
Absolutely. I wish the Product looked as good as it really is. I think visually it’s lacking some and that could be why more people are not trying it out. It’s a winner once in hand and especially after plugging it in people are in for a real treat! Getting them there is the trick. The Go 1 was better looking is all. At first sight it appears cheap like some toy gadget from China. But once in your had you know you have something. It’s actually a very well made thing. Its whole ecosystem is phenomenal. This is hands down the best thing to ever happen to Electric Guitar since ears.
Manufacturer Support
I have a couple Roland VT-4 for Vocals and Harp. Their Product Registration is easy and all my data is still there from my first VT 4. Their Website is solid. I am confident that should I ever need help they will do so. I usually get involved in Groups pertains to my Gear items. Revstar, Guitar, and now Facebook Katana Go Group. Very helpful Group. All useful info. Unlike the Spark Go community which is a thousand and more people complaint about the products and zero support. I feel like Roland reached out and saved me from those predators at Positive Grid.
The Wow Factor
I already said it lacks visual appeal. Unfortunately. If it looked as good as it really is I think people would buy them just to have them at this price. They would grab it just for the Tuner likely. A bigger screen and fancier knobs maybe? The switch looks cheap. It’s actually a good one though. That is just it. You wont know until you fiddle with it. Eyeballing it does it no justice.

"Suggestion for BOSS/Roland for Katana Go2"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

I really think this Go2 is fantastic and other than wishing it had the big wheel like the Go1 for Volume its perfect, don’t fix it.But I got to thinking about my earlier detailed Review and I think BOSS would do well to add to this Katana Go2 and perhaps have a Go3+ version which is make it more like a small Stomp Box FX so it can be mounted on a Pedal Board but also have a removable Gun-belt Clip so it could be fastened to a Strap or Pants or Belt or whatever. Have it removable so it can be put on the floor or desk or Pedal Board. Have some TRS for Expression Pedal, L/R/Mono Input/ L/R/Mono Output and MIDI and have an 18650 Battery as well as standard 9 Volt and USB C, Bluetooth. And of course an Headphone Jack. About the size of a pack of Cigarettes. Maybe even have a hole drilled for a stick of Incense. So it can be an Incense burner when not in use otherwise. That would be cool as fluck! Matter of fact every Katana product should have a provision for Incense to be held. Hell, even have a BOSS Katana scented Incense to go with it?So now you have this little portable Stomp Box Headphone Amplifier ( BOSS Katana ) that also can be used as another Multieffects Pedal for $299 Dollars US. Maybe even $399 ( I would buy it at $399 if it’s what I see in my head ) if it stands out as a battle ready BOSS Stomp Box Katana Amp. Even around $449 which is a happy number maybe better than $399?I mean really with all that the App can do and Tone Exchange you have a ton of potential here so why not make the most of it in one Stomp Box that can do it all? Paint it with that crushed black glass stuff they use in Stealth Warplanes so it’s Black as Black can be but stealthy. Give it that ominous look. Grrr. Hear it growl just by looking at it.
