It is too bad that these were discontinued. I believe the guy that designed it for St Louis Music (the parent company of Ampex at the time) is now part of Magnatone. This preamp sounds as good as any single channel tube preamp I have ever used, Including the GT Brick, the Avalon, and others in the $1000+ category. I bought mine used because the retailer had no idea what it even was. After buying it, I have been on a quest to find at least one more. These are fantastic for ribbon mics too. They are simple awesome at adding the warm tube sound to any sterile sounding microphone.

"Too bad it’s no longer available, it’s an amazing Mic preamp!"

I purchased mine in 2008 used. It is a single channel true (non hybrid) tube mic preamp. I bought it to use with my Royer R121 and it does a fantastic job. I have used it on other ribbon mics, as well as many other dynamic mics. It is definitely my main go to for large diaphragm condenser mics as well. It’s simply a very impressive mic preamp. I personally like it better than my Groove Tubes “The Brick”.
