Great controller, I've used it now for live applications as a straight midi controller. Haven't quite figured out if I can assign the pads or knobs via midi instead of USB, unless i set up a "learn" function on the modules. Straight-forward, has a good weight to it so it doesn't feel flimsy like my previous "keytar" which was a Roland AX-1 which was light and very flimsy feeling. Has an extra row to store a second set of batteries which is great because it means no digging through bags for replacements when it starts dying. I wish it came with strap-lock's instead of standard straps as the weight IS a bit lop-sided and the straps easily fall off, and it's annoying to install strap-locks on a keytar because it means heavy disassembly. Doing my 80's new wave cover-band, this fits in perfect to the analog aresenal. Great stage presence and looks retro-future like 80's would expect.

"My Favorite of 8 Shoulder Controllers I've Owned from 1984 to 2014 after Firmware v.1 2"

zZounds had the lowest price and free shipping. BEFORE my (white edition) Alesis Vortex USB Controller Firmware v.1 2 upgrade, random Patch Changes would switch numerous times during a live performance. AFTER successfully installing ver.1 2, Patch Changes do not automatically switch during live performances and the free Vyzex Patch Editor Computer Software makes programming my Vortex easy. I have been performing with my Vortex on stage for 4 hours each night for the last 4 weeks to control my YAMAHA S910 wirelessly with my MIDIWorks MIDIjet Pro. I love the lightweight feel and my audience is mesmerized by the key synchronized blue lights on top of the neck. I did install a longer shoulder strap and gold plated strap locks so it hangs a little lower and the strap will no longer come off unexpectedly. Also, all 4 of the batteries would fall out with a slight bump. So I bent the door flap hinge out enough so it now locks securely. For the money Alesis Vortex (white edition) still can't be beat!

"Decent portable addition to existing setup"

It is lightweight, portable, easy to use and play. This is a great instrument for someone looking for an 'addition' to an existing rig or to supplement your synth sounds. The only issue I had was this is the older model, so the software was a little outdated. I wish it would come with a free upgrade. However, I'm having fun with it. I bought it to spice things up a little and it does that. It's great as a secondary keyboard, as I said, to ADD to your existing setup. It is also fun and you cool as hello on stage with it.

Pain in the A$$! If you own a new MacBook, this controller in not for you! It is not compatible with OSX Mavericks out of the box and requires a considerable amount of work to get it going if at all. Mine is still currently a brick. Alesis is also taking their sweet time developing support for the new Mac OS. Sonivox and ableton also put you thru a loop when it come to registering the software and getting it in working order for the Vortex. Innovative product, but you would think it would be higher quality and have finer product support and user ability.
