Powered System. 25W total power. Designed for accurate response.
Overview
The TASCAM VL-S21 is an affordable monitoring system for home recording and practicing. This self-powered satellite system provides 5W per channel to the desktop speakers and 15W to the ported sub. The desktop speakers are also remarkably thin, allowing these stylish speakers to be used at home or in the studio.
The left and right speakers use NXT technology drivers for full-range sound in a thin driver package. This approach improves on the traditional woofer and tweeter design by eliminating the phase cancellation that occurs when using multiple drivers and crossovers. NXT technology drivers provide wider dispersion, more uniform loudness and reduced room interaction than competing technologies. A single NXT driver covers a wider range than traditional drivers, reducing the phase distortion caused by using multiple drivers and crossovers.
Unlike multimedia speakers designed for listening to MP3s and video games, the VL-S21 was designed with a flat frequency response for critical listening and mixing. They're ideal for home recording studios, practicing with our CD Trainers, or monitoring desktop and laptop computer recording systems. Created for musicians looking for an affordable speaker system that doesn't take up a lot of desk space, the VL-S21 is an excellent entry-level monitoring solution.

"sound quality/price ratio : very good"
Im very pleased with what I've got for what I've paid. I think the sound quality/price ratio is hard to beat. I recommend it over any PC speakers for listening music from your computer, CD player, TV set or mp3 player .... as long as you can live with the fact that there is no headphone jack/volume/eq ...
Sound
OK, these things are not "real" monitors and are certainly not good enough for any serious monitoring duties but ... hey... we are taking about $99.95 here... And compared to any $100 speakers (the amp is included here..) I believe you'll have a hard time finding something better. Sound is fairly accurate, nothing exaggerated, mids are not bad at all. The sub is doing a good job but wont do much below 50-60 Hz..
Features
Well, again, these are just plain speakers for "studio monitoring", not your average PC speakers so there is no headphone jack and no volume knob, just like many "real" (read more, way more expensive) studio monitors. Of course, it would be nice to have them if you are using it as PC speakers... There is a power button though :-\.
Ease of Use
Since they are simple as they can get (assuming that pressing the power button is "simple") they are quite easy to use : plug the power cable, plug the input RCA cables and press the power button AFTER you've turned your source down.
Quality
Everything seems well designed and assembled (again,… read more for $99.95...).
Value
At this price point, I will buy the VL-S21 over any PC speakers, I use them for music, movies, games ... They beat Altec Lansing, Creative and anything else I've owned or tried.
Manufacturer Support
never used
The Wow Factor
Yes, I will buy another "pair" (+sub) if I need affordable speakers.
Musical Background:
Above average (read "getting old")
Musical Style:
