Evans heads. Birch shell. Die-cast hoops.
Overview
It's hard to think of anything more important to your music than having the right snare sound. Quite a few drummers use more than one snare drum on stage as well as when recording. The tonal character of the snare drum is determined by many factors such as the shell material, shell size, shell thickness, snappy snare, and hoops.
"ALL" Birch Shell
With so many Maple kits on the market today, it's almost hard to remember that just 15 years ago, Birch kits were more popular than Maple. But a significant number of pro players still prefer the sound of Birch and many more are rediscovering Birch's round, slightly darker sound and great projection. Starclassic Performer shells are 100% Birch with thin shell construction that offers a resonance and clarity that rivals some of the best maple kits. Best of all, advances in drum technology allow Tama to offer this fully professional drum for the price you'd pay for an intermediate set.
Die-Cast Hoops
Hoops not only affect drum tuning; they also affect drum sound. That's why the choice of hoops was so important to the designers of Tama's professional drum lines. For our Starclassic Performer EFX, we chose zinc die-cast hoops, which are manufactured by injecting molten metal into molds. Die-cast hoops have more density and are more consistent in shape than triple flanged hoops, which are manufactured by bending metal plates. Die-cast hoops make tuning more consistent and easier to achieve because the tension bolts always contact the hoop… read more properly. Drums fitted with die-cast hoops also offer crisper attack, clear and resonant highs and much more powerful rim shots. read less

"A sweet snare for the money"
Right now I'm using this as my secondary snare drum, since I have a custom made Dunnett titanium snare which is absolutely the best. Even so, I will never get rid of this snare, it has unique sonic properties that make it especially useful to me.
Sound
The snare drum sounds really bright and loud, rimshots are thunderous! It works well for hard rock and metal, but it's better suited to reggae and techno; any style of music where you a short, sharp, loud snare drum. The best way to describe the sound is like a steel snare but a little rounder and drier.
Features
It's got all the stuff you need, and nothing you don't. The throwoff is very sturdy and reliable.
Ease of Use
All you gotta do is hit it, it ain't really that hard.
Quality
I have the lacquered version of this snare drum and the finish is a little fragile. But the shell sounds great, and the hardware is really first rate.
Value
I seriously think you'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding snare drum at this price.
Manufacturer Support
I have a 13 piece tama kit and I've never had anything go wrong.
The Wow Factor
The selling point for me on this drum is the rimshots, which are in the ear-splitting range. This drum just has that huge, full-bodied sounding CRACK!
