Neumann KH 120A Active Studio Monitor

The KH 120 is the first product in the line of Neumann Studio Monitors. Neumann is well-known in the audio industry for its high quality microphones in studios, broadcast, and on stage. Neumann has also been a pioneer in the audio industry for over 80 years with a long history of world-class products. These products have kept Neumann on the cutting edge of technology - from mixing consoles and disc cutting lathes, to more recent innovations in digital technology with the Solution-D system.

The KH 120 studio monitor is designed for use as a near-field loudspeaker or as a rear loudspeaker in larger multi-channel systems. The KH 120 represents the quality musicians and engineers expect in acoustic and electronic simulation and measurement technologies. It has a Mathematically Modeled Dispersion waveguide, flexible acoustical controls, analog class-AB amplifiers, various input formats and an extensive mounting hardware range. All of this provides the user with the maximum versatility over a wide variety of acoustic conditions, source equipment, and physical locations. A subwoofer, such as the Neumann KH-810, with its 7.1 High Definition Bass Manager, can be added to deepen the low-frequency response to 18 Hz and increase the system's maximum output level. The KH-120 is perfect for tracking, mixing and mastering in music, broadcast, project and post-production studios.

- Powerful titanium fabric dome: Low-distortion high-frequency reproduction
- Elliptical Mathematically Modeled Dispersion waveguide: Smoother off-axis response, More forgiving of diverse acoustical environments
- Composite sandwich cone: Damping of break-up modes
- Long throw bass driver: Low distortions at high sound levels
- Two-color + dimmable Neumann logo: Displays operation status and activation of the extensive protection system
- Robust metal grille: Protects against mechanical damage
- Large front panel ports: Reduced bass compression and easier to mount in tight spaces such as OB vans
- Compact aluminum cabinet (magnetically shielded): Minimizes resonances, better heat dissipation, long life
- Wide horizontal dispersion: Freedom of movement across the mixing console
- Narrow vertical dispersion: Reduces reflections off the mixing console
- One-piece front panel with no discontinuities: Reduced diffraction and smoother frequency response
- Powerful analog amplifiers with large headroom: Improved transient response
- Production consistency: Any KH 120 is "pair-matched" to any other KH 120
- 4-position bass, low-mid and treble acoustical controls: More control in diverse acoustical environments
- Wide range input gain and output level controls: Easier interfacing with signal sources
- Mounting hardware options: More flexibility in mounting cabinets in more diverse locations
- Display dimmer: For low lighting level conditions or behind the screen applications
- Ground lift: Reduced noise in electrically noisy environments and over-comes ground loops
- Universal switched-mode power supply (100...240 V): One version works in any country and robust to poor quality mains supply
- Separate woofer and tweeter electronic peak limiters and thermal-protection circuitry: High reliability

I own a professional recording facility and had some pretty decent studio monitors from the likes of Tannoy, Mackie, and Event...BUT I found myself most often listening to mixes elsewhere and they just didn't seem to translate. I thought maybe it was just my mixing room (not boasting...but it's a great room) causing me to make several (sometimes seriously significant) revisions to mixes before I was happy listening to them in other "real" environments and finally sending them off for mastering. It was tough for me to make a decision to purchase nearfields that seemed to be very small with a fairly large price tag. But at the suggestion of a studio engineer buddy of mine, I bit the bullet and made the purchase. THIS HAS BEEN THE BEST STUDIO PURCHASE I HAVE MADE IN YEARS!! Immediately (I'm not freakin' kidding you), I could tell a tremendous difference in the sonic character of everything that was pouring from these small beauties...and instantly (I'm still not freakin' kidding you), my mixes were being nailed one time through. It was as if I had a brand new set of ears!! Neumann has usually been at the other end of things...input...not output. Let me just say that what he U87 has done for microphones, the KH120A will do for studio monitors. I have my KH120A's paired with a KRK 10s sub running through a Radial MC3 monitor controller. Just wanted to put all the facts out there. Make the purchase. Thank me later.

Sonically brilliant! Tight, focused lows & mids and pristine highs. These monitors reveal read more things in your mixes that you wouldn't have noticed before and allows you make corrections much more easily...even minor changes are obvious. A wonderful natural sound.

Switches for EQ adustments and input sensitivity on rear. The glowing Neumann logo on the face of the monitor changes from white to red if you are pushing too much input into them...that's a great feature!

Ease of Use
Plug'em in and viola!!!

These things are built like a all metal housing and protective metal grille on woofers and tweeters. AND they looking stunningly amaz-za-zing!

At twice the price, it would still be worth it.

Manufacturer Support
It's Neumann...come on.

The Wow Factor
It's Neumann. There is a legacy there. I give them a wow factor of "OMG!!!" I hear comments from bands all the time now like "I can't believe the sound that comes from those speakers." or "Dude...those monitors sound f#$%ing bada$$!!"
