Overview
First introduced in 1942, the Gibson J-45 has remained a cornerstone of the Gibson acoustic lineup. Known worldwide as "The Workhorse," it earned its reputation through its wide acceptance, no-nonsense simplicity, and understated elegance. It is one of the most recorded acoustic guitars in history and Gibson's best-selling acoustic model of all time.
Handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana, by Gibson's expert acoustic luthiers, the Gibson J-45 Special offers players a USA-built Gibson acoustic guitar at an exceptionally attractive price point. It features the iconic round-shoulder body constructed with solid mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top, reinforced with Gibson's traditional scalloped X-bracing. This classic tonewood combination delivers a warm, balanced voice with excellent dynamic range, making it well suited for virtually any musical style.
The J-45 Special uses a slightly thinner "concert depth" body compared to the J-45 Standard, resulting in a tighter, more focused low end that sits perfectly in the mix while also improving playing comfort. The utile neck is joined to the body with a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint and, like all Gibson acoustic guitars, is secured using hot hide glue for optimal resonance. The neck features a fast-playing SlimTaper profile, and the rosewood fretboard has a 12" radius, 20 standard frets, and mother-of-pearl dot inlays.
A traditional belly-up rosewood bridge is fitted with a TUSQ saddle, while the nut and… read more bridge pins are also TUSQ for enhanced tonal transfer and tuning stability. Grover Rotomatic tuners provide smooth, reliable tuning performance. The J-45 Special is finished in satin nitrocellulose lacquer.
For stage and studio use, it comes equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element Bronze under-saddle piezo pickup with active electronics and an easily accessible soundhole-mounted volume control, making it truly plug-and-play anywhere. A premium soft shell case is included.
