I’ve been wanting a Junior with a Custom style body for a long, long time and I finally have one. The one I received had no flaws, it was almost perfectly intonated out of the box, the neck was straight, frets were all smooth and level, the Grover’s kept the tuning stable and solid and the action was pretty good. I played it for a couple of days as is and got used to the stock tone, and then I made a few slight changes. I cut the strings off, removed the “Blues Power” badge then added a GraphTech ResoMax NW2 wrap around bridge, a fresh set of Ernie Ball Slinky 10’s and some Dunlop strap locks. The new bridge allowed me to set the intonation dead on and made a big improvement to the sustain while taming just the slightest almost unnoticeable amount of the mid bite from the Duncan P90. Not sure what model P90 it is, but it is a great sounding pickup regardless. Cleans up nicely by rolling back on the volume, and screams with gritty, punchy clarity like a P90 should when opened up. It is a P90 so you will get a bit of noise, but that comes with the territory and it’s not nearly as buzzy as some others that I use. The tone and volume controls work in harmony with each other so I’ve been able to easily pull a good tone from any amp that I’ve played it through. The neck is nice and chunky, so if that is your thing you’ll love it. Overall it’s a really sweet, solid and beautiful and guitar and I am quite happy with it. I love the stock pickup, the beefy neck, the read more Custom body and the aged black finish with the full binding and the block inlays. The “case” it comes with is a bit of a joke so if you plan on taking it on the road you’ll want to invest in something better. I was a bit sketchy of the price at first but now that I’ve had a chance to play it for a couple of months I feel it was worth it. It’s about half the cost of a new Gibson Junior and yet it comes with 100% of the tone and feel so as long as you don’t care about that word on the headstock, this gem from Epiphone won’t disappoint.
