Overview
The story of "Greeny" is shrouded in mystery, but few guitars are as illustrious. Greeny is one of the most iconic original Les Paul Standards ever made, with a unique sound as recognizable as the guitar itself. Previously owned by Peter Green, it was used throughout his time with Fleetwood Mac and later sold to Gary Moore, who used it for three decades with Thin Lizzy and as a solo artist. Now owned by Kirk Hammett, Greeny has passed through the hands of three legendary guitarists. Its distinctive sound is partly from the out-of-phase middle switch position due to the neck pickup's reversed magnetic polarity.

The Epiphone Kirk Hammett "Greeny" Les Paul Standard is a collaboration between Epiphone and the Gibson Custom Shop. This exceptional guitar was inspired by Kirk's legendary original and allows players around the world the opportunity to experience some of the magic of "Greeny" for themselves. It features premium components, including Gibson USA Greenybucker pickups with the neck pickup reverse mounted and complete with a reverse polarity magnet, a Switchcraft pickup selector and 1/4" output jack, CTS potentiometers, Mallory capacitors, and Grover Rotomatic tuners with spade-style buttons on a Gibson-style "open book" headstock. Overall, a great guitar. Well worth the price.
Sound
This guitar sounds awesome. The middle switch position puts the pickups out of phase. However you can change the character of the out of phase sound to suit your needs. Strat with the neck and bridge pickups volume controls turned all the way up to ten with the toggle switch in the middle position.If you turn the bridge volume from 10 down to nine, the treble frequencies are greater and the sound is somewhat nasal, typical out of phase sound on a lot of guitars that have phase reversal.If you turn the bridge volume back to 10 with the switch in the middle, and turn the neck volume down from 10 to 9, you get a sweeter, singing out of phase sound that is smoother. Tweak the tone knobs using the the switch in the middle, and there are many tones available.The neck pickup by itself is smooth and syrupy for playing on the treble strings, and the bridge pickup by itself is rather snarky, great for playing through high gain tube amps.

The tuners on this guitar weren’t snug. Along with most of the other fasteners on the guitar, from the factory. This should be taken care of with any full pro set up.The hardware is a step up from that on my two Epiphone 1959 Les Pauls and my EPR Les Paul Custom Koa, The bridge in particular. Just be aware that although the tail piece is a Locktone, and won’t fall of when all the string tension is removed, the bridge isn’t,… read more and will.
Ease of Use
After a full set up, this guitar feels and plays better than my 1959’s, or my Gibson Les Pauls..
Quality
The fit and finish on this guitar is fantastic. I did have to tap down one slightly high fret, but other than that, there was no pokey fret ends. The frets were quite smooth and didn’t need polishing.The paint finish was really smooth to the touch and somewhat glossy looking on the top.The body is a center seam two piece mahogany body, and no cheesy veneers are on the back The neck is a one piece mahogany neck, with no heel piece and no scarf joint. The neck profile seems to be a soft C shape and it’s thick. I really like it.Also the nut was cut perfectly from the factory. I e never experienced that with an Epiphone before. Usuallly I have to lower the slots.
Value
This guitar is worth the 1.5K price in my opinion. It’s better put together than my Gibson LP, and costs less than half of what the Gibson Greeny costs, and has better specs. Real MOP inlays, a long neck tenon, and a better finish overall.

The Wow Factor
The look of this guitar is very appealing visually. I love the lemon color. The fretboard is nice and dark. And, this guitar has the Gibson open book headstock.
