Honoring the original 1960s-era "Solid Guitar," this Epiphone G-400 PRO features Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers with push/pull coil-splitting capabilities.

The Epiphone G-400 PRO honors the original 1960s classic "SG" (Solid Guitar) and features Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers with push/pull coil-splitting plus Wilkinson Vintage Classic Machine Heads. Available in Cherry and Ebony color finishes.

Classic 60s Era "Solid Guitar"

The modern G-400 PRO is inspired by the first generation of SGs made in the 1960s at the legendary Gibson and Epiphone factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan that produced the Les Paul and the Casino. The SG model was originally intended to replace the Les Paul, which temporarily went out of production from 1961-1968 and became of favorite of both blues and heavy rock artists. The new G-400 PRO is constructed using the same dimensions and build techniques as vintage SGs and features a Mahogany body and neck with a comfortable 1960's SlimTaper 'D' profile and a 24.75" scale length. The Pau Ferro fingerboard has pearloid Trapezoid inlays, 22 medium jumbo frets, a 12" radius, and an adjustable truss rod with a 'bell' cover.

Alnico Classic PRO Humbuckers with Coil Splitting

The G-400 PRO features Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers made with Alnico-V magnets, which produce a slightly higher output especially in the mid and highs. Each pickup has its own Volume and Tone control with full-size 500K O potentiometers matched with Epiphone's rugged, all-metal, 3-way toggle pickup selector switch for long-lasting performance. Each pickup also is wired for coil-tapping. By pulling up the pickup's volume knob, the humbucker read more will become a "single-coil" pickup, allowing players an infinite variety of tones from single-coil bark to full humbucker bite.

When winding humbuckers, Epiphone utilizes a double vacuum waxing process that ensures quiet operation free from microphonic hum. The pickup is first placed in the specialized wax vacuuming system before the cover is placed on the unit to ensure that the wax fully penetrates to the very center of the pickup and solidifies all parts. After the cover is placed on, it is again given a second vacuum wax bath until the unit is completely saturated with wax. Epiphone also uses high quality ABS plastic bobbins, 1010 Cold Rolled Steel pole shoes and pole screws, the finest magnet wire available.

Solid Epiphone Hardware

The G-400 PRO features Epiphone's legendary LockTone bridge and Stopbar tailpiece for incredible sustain along with Wilkinson Vintage Classic Machine Heads with an 18:1 turning ratio. The G-400 PRO comes in classic Cherry (CH) or Ebony (EB) finish. A left-handed model is available in Cherry (CH). A hard case is available through Authorized Epiphone Dealers.

I've read myriad reviews of the G400 PRO that say this is one the best models Epiphone offers. I've owned approx.15 Epis and I have to agree with the others. It's a truly superlative guitar. The pickups are really nice sounding. Bright but not "clangy" and they sing when cranked though a distortion pedal. (The earlier Epi pups weren't impressive, or expressive.) The coil tap function isn't really too pronounced on the neck pup but has a nice effect on the bridge pup, especially in the "middle position".The neck is delightfully slim and VERY fast with nicely dressed frets. Due to the design, the upper frets are much more accessible than on a Les Paul. There is no real "neck dive". That's likely due to the plastic tuning keys; Grovers add a bit of weight. (I use a 3" wide suede strap which helps hold the body in place.)What really knocked me out was the finish. The photos I saw online do it no justice at all. This guitar is beautiful. BEAUTIFUL. In photos the color appears solid but it actually has a light metal flake sparkle to it.It should be noted that this guitar has cream colored binding on the neck. The specs state 'no binding'.As with many guitars I've purchased from zZounds, this one came from the "scratch and dent" column and carried a healthy 27% discount. The damage? It has two dings on the back. I thought it was "buckle rash" until I saw the two corresponding holes in the box. The poor fella had a rough ride some time in the past.Out of the box the intonation was perfect. The read more only "issue" with this guitar is a slight fret buzz on the B string at the 5th fret. I raised the bridge slightly and that has almost completely eliminated the problem.I would definitely recommend this guitar.School boy uniform not included. (Hi, Angus!)In my rating I had to deduct one star from the 'Quality' category due to the fret buzz.

Musical Background:
Former semi-pro now a stay-at-home jammer.

Musical Style:
Rock, rock and rock.
