Feature:
Was looking for the flexability offered by the multiple input/output options (mic/line level I/O), phantom power, and the nice addition of phase reversal for situations that demand it.
Quality:
Looked under the hood and the unit seems solid...but is a little "hacked together. Poor insulation on cabling between molex connectors, lots of hot glue holding things together.
YGWYPF (You get what you pay for)
Value:
2 space rack unit is a little larger than others on the market...but for me the added features/price made up for the size difference between the various models out there.
Desirability:
Unit is tre' sexy...front panel is brushed aluminum and all controls feel rock solid. Colored ligh up buttons and indicators have a coolness factor that any geek can appreciate.
Sound:
Ordered it directly from the company after scouring the web for a 8 channel pre-amp that could output 8 digital channels to my EchoLayla 24/96.
Initial testing shows unit to be moderatly quiet but for the price range you'll get no complaints. ADAT output at 48Mhz is adequate, the company expects the potential for expandability for Firewire output in the future (as an add on)
This is an excellent entry level preamp for anyone looking to add 8 channels especially if you go for the ADAT option.
Get one (or 2) and you are portable (kindof) and ready to rock! (or roll!)
Support:
SMPRO has been pleasant to deal with and seems commited to the entry level musician. Danny and Hellen have been extremey patient with my questions over the last year of roll out on this product, i'm happy to have seen this through to fruition.
Overall:
While this might not be the best sounding preamp on the market...it has a feature set and price that will make any project studio bedroom noodler happy.
