I currently use the KRK V8 series monitors in my video editing suite and can tell you that for double the price, there is still no equal. We researched the nearfield monitor purchase quite well and decided on the V8s even though it took 6 weeks to get them (this was a few years ago). Being an audiophile, I can say that the highs are amazingly articulate but absolutely not harsh unless the input material is. That is a difficult feat for many speakers to achieve. Considering the fact that it is a two driver system, the bass response is decent and the midrange is to die for. If you feed serious bass into the V8s, they never show a weak side. Admittedly, they do not fill a room with chest thumping sound, but the accuracy of bass reproduction (even at the verge of being overdriven) is superb. We have our inputs run through a tube pre-amp and I can say that I prefer the high end of the audo spectrum on the V8s over my B&W Matrix 801s. Even though the 801s pump out more low end SPL, they require so much tweaking to get them to sound right. The KRKs are very revealing, but also much more easy to setup. Add the convenience of internal bi-amping, a solid small enclosure, XLR/TRS inputs, and bass/treble attenuation, and you have monitors that are priced way too cheap. The best praise I can give them is: Check eBay going rates for used V8s. They hold their value amazingly well because everyone loves them. You can't go wrong with KRK V8s.

Excluding the HR824s, the active studio monitors I auditioned by Event, Behringer, Mackie (HR624), Alesis, M-Audio and the smaller models in the same V series by KRK sounded like toys when compared to the V8s. These KRKs have the smoothest, richest mids I've heard in this price range, and coupled with the sub I already owned, the setup sounds phenomenal; a substantial, clear sound with a wide, deep soundstage. It makes critical listening and mixing on them very fun. I really chose these over the HR824s because of this fun factor; both monitors will do the job well, but Which makes the overall experience of listening to music more enjoyable? For me, it was the V8s. So far, the mixes on which I've used the V8s are translating quite well. I should also add that the KRKs are impressive to look at, if you need to wow clients. Of course there are better monitors out there, but for the price, these are hard to beat.
