Feature:
Echo put together a great feature set to draw us in with a good range of included checklist items: 8 ins and outs, PCI support instead of USB or Firewire, a nice mixer applet, and good driver support for both Mac and PC. Unfortunately, sound quality and sonic accuracy did not seem important enough to Echo.
Quality:
Low marks here because of the poor sound quality. There's really no excuse for this, and I would have happily paid more. Be warned: if you want a good 8x8 audio interface, you may have to pay more than $400-$500 if you care about sound quality. A possible exception is the Focusrite Saffire series, which you should by all means consider.
Value:
A low score here because of the poor sound quality of the Layla 3G. This has been a big surprise of the unpleasant kind. Please don't make the same mistake I did - take your dollars elsewhere!
Desirability:
This audio interface is one of the worst and most problematic "Trojan horses" to sneak into my studio in years. The feature set reasonable price seem attractive. But getting bad sound quality out of an audio interface is a big problem no matter what the price. I wish I'd never bought or even heard of this unit.
Sound:
Do you want a high pass filter, or do you want a good audio interface for your computer? The Layla 3G is a high pass filter. If you care about recording kick drums or bass sounds, this is not the unit for you. The Layla strongly rolls off bass frequencies below about 120 HZ. Overall, the Layla has a harsh and somewhat buzzy sound that belies its pretty silver box.
Ease of Use:
This unit works well and is easy to use until you start trying to record with it. Then you'll find yourself wondering - "yes, but where is that bass part I just recorded"? With the Echo Layla 3G, bass and kick drum sounds get a severe squashing, particularly when RECORDING these.
Support:
I have contacted this company and their telephone support seemed pretty clueless.
Overall:
I am currently looking for a replacement. My latest efforts to record some tracks from a drum machine have fallen so far short in the bass department that I am replacing the Layla 3G right away.
