M-Audio AudioBuddy Dual Microphone Preamp with Phantom Power and Direct Box Reviews

97 People rated this product :

"Audio Buddy fills the need for an inexpensive clean preamp."
Feature:
I really wish it had xlr outs w/ground lifts so it could truly be used as a direct box. But it has nice clean gain with mic AND instrument inputs.

Quality:
It's very well built. My only complaint in this area would be that the 1/4" jacks are board mounted only and not secured to the panel. This could become a problem after heavy use.

Value:
This product is worth what it usually goes for.

Sound:
It sounds fine for my application. I'm using it as a bass preamp before going into a rack compressor and then into my Alesis Sumo 300. This setup works great. Without it, the Sumo's impedance is too low and the amount of gain available would not be sufficient for a good signal.

Ease of Use:
It is very simple to use.

Overall:
I'll probably step up the M Audio DMP3 in a few months.

"Best Mic Pre-Amp under $500"
I own a couple of big meaty sounding mics, including a Studio Projects C1 (another killer value), and a Line Audio SM6 (which isn't so beefy, but lots of flexibility). The C1 needs very little boost, but the SM6 needs a comparative ton...and the Audio Buddy is a GREAT box. I've rented a couple of more expensive tube amps, but the 'colouration' is low fidelity. I'm recording for theatre and video projects where true fidelity is key, and this little box kicks butt. Stupid name, great device.
