"Great looking & sounding digital studio for the price."

Feature:
Overall ok however most of the guitar distortions leave a lot to be desired. I've used one or two but not often. My only criticism would be the small monitoring screen. More tracks would also be nice, but "bounce" works well so you can get around that given the price.

Quality:
I imported this unit from Neveda USA to Sydney Australia, so I guess it may have taken some knocks along the way via FedX? If so, it hasn't made any difference. Very happy.

Value:
I paid a little over half the price via the States than what a DP-02 costs in Australia. :-)

Desirability:
Looks way better than the earlier models.

Sound:
This is my first home studio digital recorder so I don't have much to compare to. However, I've been playing guitar for over 30 years and have "some" idea of what is a reasonable sound! To my ears it sounds great. My muso friends agree.

Ease of Use:
Very easy once you've flipped through the manual just to be sure.

Support:
Haven't need it.

Overall:
I've produced my first home recorded CD on the DP-02 and I'm extremly happy with the result.

"Great value for the money. Be realistic and you won't be disappointed."

Feature:
I love the thin profile and metal construction. The ability to burn CDs as data files, wave files, and regular CDs at this price is impressive. I wish it had more tracks, but acknowledge that this would drive the price up as well. It makes you think out your arrangement and record efficiently, which can be a good thing. I may get one because of this built-in limitation/paradigm. If the effects were better, it would get a higher number than 7 for features.

Quality:
The quality is a step up from the plastic units. Although many of the features are the same as the older ones, this model has a cool vibe and handsome, sleek appearance. With an "under $500" price you may imagine that it feels like a toy. It does not.

Value:
This is a great value. To think that many of us paid the same price, or more, for cassette recorders a few years back. This model has its limits, the effects are average, some even just poor, but for the money it is remarkable. Songwriters would be smart to look at this unit. Personally, I like dedicated recorders better than computers.

Desirability:
This is a great looking piece of hardware. The design is much better than the older models that Tascam makes. It would be very interesting to see the same design in a 16 (or even 24 track) unit.

Sound:
I give it an overall score of 8 in the sound department. The actual fidelity is quite good, perhaps even great. It's the effects that drag the number back down. Skipping the effects gave me the best overall final product, very clean and robust. I recommend using an outside effect unit if you are recording something more ambitious than a demo. Guitarists, don't throw away your pre-amps and effects just yet. These will do for daily practice and for demos, but that's about it.

Ease of Use:
This was the easiest recorder I have ever used. I recorded two songs on it right away with little fuss. The recorder midi-synched a Triton sequencer keyboard, track by track, after a quick look-through both manuals. It is intuitive, but you may have to check a few settings in the manual from time to time. Beginners should not be intimidated by this machine.

Support:
I have not used support.

Overall:
I'm still keeping my Roland 1680. It has better effects, virtual tracks, and it can mix sixteen tracks. Having said that, It was also much higher in price. I will purchase the DP02 for it's ease of use, portability, and 40 gig hard drive. Sometimes I just want a professional recording on a few tracks. The songs can get lost when there are too many choices and options, switching from right brain to left brain and back again. Convenience and ease of use are big factor.

News
Composing and recording use two completely different parts of your brain. When you've been struck with inspiration, you don't want complicated machinery stifling your creative flow, but you also don't want a unit that's so simple it limits your creative expression. The Tascam DP02 8-Track Hard Disk Recorder strikes the perfect balance between ease of use and powerful design. And with the integrated CD burner, sharing your vision is just that much easier. It's like a conduit through which your greatest ideas can enter the world.

If the term "multitrack recorder" makes you nervous, fear not: the DP02's layout was designed around a streamlined recording workflow, and it makes laying down multi-part instrumentation a snap. Plug a microphone into one of the recorder's two XLR inputs or a guitar into the dedicated instrument jack, "arm" the first two tracks, and hit record. When you've captured your basic idea, keep the mics plugged in, select two different tracks, and hit record again. . . you're overdubbing! Repeat this process to layer embellishments, harmonies, and counter-melodies until you've got a pop-orchestral number that'll make Brian Wilson green with envy. A built-in metronome helps keep all those parts in synch with one another, and the clear LCD and footswitch punch-in option make it easy to clean up flubbed takes. The overdub process is made so effortless by the Tascam DP02, it's like having your own studio assistant.

Intuitive layout is only the beginning. With eight separate tracks, you've got plenty of space for even complex arrangements, and keeping each element separate gives you more arranging flexibility after you're done recording. Say you've just added a violin part that you think might conflict with the accordion lick you recorded three takes ago, but you're not sure which one you want to keep. Simply ride the respective tracks' faders to pull them in and out of the mix and listen to which one sounds best. Do you think that vocal track could use a little reverb to really sparkle? Don't just imagine it, use the DP02's built-in effects section and give it a listen. There's even flanger, overdrive and a bunch more effects to add a little spank to your guitar and bass parts. Dedicated EQ and left-right panning controls on every track helps you hear exactly what works and what doesn't in your stereo mix.

This flexibility makes the Tascam DP02 a great sketch pad and indispensable pre-production tool, but you can also use it to take your project from idea to finished product. Simply bounce down your song to the Tascam's 40GB internal hard disk, then burn to audio CD with the integrated CDRW burner. Now you've got a physical recording you can take with you anywhere and share with anyone. Alternately, connect your DP02 to a computer via USB and drop your project into any multitrack recording program for the ultimate in mixing and mastering flexibility.

Whether or not you've used a multitrack recorder before, the DP02 makes expressing, developing, and sharing your unique creativity a whole lot easier. You won't have to keep those unrealized musical masterpieces to yourself any longer.
Tacam's DP02 makes recording simple by matching 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastudio interface--so you can ditch the menus and concentrate on the music. A pair of record-quality Tascam mic pres feature XLR inputs with phantom power for condenser mics and a guitar in for direct recording. Each channel gives you dedicated controls for instant access to fader level, record arm/track mute, pan, effect send, high and low EQ. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.

Two effects processors are included in the DP02. A multieffects processor on the input provides great-sounding overdrive, flange, delay and more for your guitar, vocal, drum and bass tracks. In addition, there's a reverb processor on a send and return for adding hall, room, plate or chamber reverb to your mix. The DP02 is loaded with great Tascam extras like a chromatic tuner, metronome, and bar-and-beat display for getting around your song.

The DP02 records two channels at a time to a built-in 40GB hard drive. When you're satisfied with your production, arm the dedicated master track for your stereo mixdown.
