The CT2 requires power for operation from a standard 9v battery for operation (battery not included). You can check battery performance by simply selecting the rotary selector fully clockwise to the ‘Battery Check’ position. If the LED indicator illuminates you battery has tested OK. If the LED fails to illumintate your battery is drained of power and requires replacement.

The basic operation guide for testing cables is to connect one end of your cable to the left hand side connector sockets of the CT2, and the other end of your cable to the right hand side of the CT2. Depending read more on how many pin to -> pin cable connections are housed within your currently connected cable, simply turn the rotary dial through each position and take note of the LED indicators status (on/off). If the selected pin to -> pin connection is OK, the paired LED’s for the appropriate selection will be illuminated. Afailed connection status can be observed by taking note of non illumated pairs.

For single pin 1 to ->1 connections there are two (2) banana connections on the front panel permanently wired as a continuity tester with LED and beeper indicators. simply connect each end of your single pin cable to indicate operational status with an illunminated LED and status beep.

If you need DMX, this is the tester. Even if you don't need DMX, it's got the other connectors pretty well covered in a well built, competitively-priced unit.

Features
The CT-2 includes most of the connectors I commonly use for audio/video/lighting. It tests not only straight-thru cables but also adapters. Add 1/8" and 3/32" adapters to the kit and it's got quite a bit of the common stuff covered. Note that the photo is of the CT-1 unit (at least as of 2007/03/08). The CT-1 is silver; the CT-2 is black and adds the DMX connectors, necessitating relocation of some connectors: the banana jacks, phono, and BNC connectors are on the front of the CT-2. If you really study the photo at http://www.smproaudio.com/CT2.htm you will note that the left XLR connector is labeled "XLR/m". This label is incorrect (and actually appears on my unit) -- the left XLR connector is actually female.

Ease of Use
Testing straight-thru connectors is intuitive. Adapters, however, require some thought. Either (1) document your results with known-good adapters before you have to diagnose a problem or (2) download my cheat sheet which covers some common adapters.(http://www.tritel.net/~eelliott/CSC/Confidential/Download/SM_Pro_Audio_CT-2_connector_wiring.pdf). I rate it highly because it includes a lot of connectors for $30. There are probably testers that test multiple connections simultaneously (rather than one wire at a time) with read more more automation that cost a lot more. When researching testers, I finally identified one Italian unit with a similar connector complement that looked more sophisticated, but fortunately couldn't find a USA retailer -- which forced me keep looking until I found the CT-2.

Quality
Rugged. Metal case. Good connectors. Rubber feet. Fit/finish are good. Looks good. I just received it today, but I expect that it will accept some abuse.

Value
A bargain at $30. It even includes a pair of red/black test leads for continuity testing. No case is included (but it fits nicely in an old Sonicare tooth brush zippered travel case).
