Pair (Black) with mic input (8W + 8W).

The speakers that came with your computer just won't cut it for listening to MP3s and webcasts, enjoying DVD movies, or doing serious gaming. If the light, flimsy feel of them didn't let you know that, the sound quality certainly did. Roland has stepped in and made 2 models of solidly-constructed monitors to fix this problem. This pairÖthe MA8sÖare a low-cost way to put your audio in the hands of a music company, not a computer company.

They feature twin 8 Watt amplifiers pushing 10cm woofers and 4.7cm tweeters. Roland doesn't claim that these monitors will outshine a pair of high-quality home speakers. However, they will guarantee that the sound of the MA8s put the average pair of computer speakers to shame. They are ergonomically designed with the computer user in mindÖthe monitor fronts feature individual bass and treble controls as well as a convenient headphone jack. Their magnetic shielding prevents interference with your monitor and the platinum color will match all your computer peripherals.

For some of you audio is a big part of why you have a computer. You may compose music or do multimedia work on your PC. In this case, the MA8s may not offer quite the power and detail you are looking for. But don't worryÖRoland still has you covered! An interesting venture for someone who wants high quality PC speakers and can live without chest thumping sound. Also good for an engineer looking for an extra reference setup in a studio. But again, a similarly priced hi-fi system would perform way better.

Sound
Sounds better than most multimedia speakers out there (yeah, including creative labs and other dork oriented brands). The Best thing about the sound here is the fact that these are nearfield-multimedia speakers, meaning that you can sit 3 ft away from them and they'll sound great (as opposed to hi-fi speakers that require a certain distance to provide decent sound imaging) and these won't tire your ears. But please note that even though these can be loud enough for personal multimedia applications, they're only driven by 8 watts each and will distort easily if you try to get'em work the duties of a home stereo.

Features
Basic desktop speaker features. 2-band EQ, volume knob, headphone output and a VERY NOISY (i.o.w., useless) mic input. Rear pannel features both RCA and 1/8" inputs, the RCA being the quieter of the two.

Quality
Now, this is where a line must be drawn. These are NOT studio monitors. They're great sounding multimedia speakers that compliment a home PC perfectly and you can add these to an actual studio setup in order to have an extra reference system (exactly because they are less than monitors). Their construction read more leaves a bit to be desired for $100, the plastic rumbles, the port chuffs and the I/O's whistle when the bass is thumping. Once again, not made for LOUD listening.

Value
These are good quality that speakers work well for the above mentioned tasks, but i find them and their performance way over-priced at$100. You can get a Hi-fi stereo for the same price, with all of MA-8's features and much better sound ('cept for the near filed listening).
