Searching for a workstation keyboard that can truly "do it all"? It's not an easy task. Some workstations are powerful but clunky, better suited to the studio, whereas others are fantastic stage instruments with only limited sequencing ability. The Roland Fantom G8, on the other hand, is equally impressive both on tour or as part of your production studio.

A stage and studio instrument? It seems like a contradiction, but the Fantom G is sure to defy any expectations you might have as to what a "workstation keyboard" is. It's got thousands of beautiful, sophisticated sounds, yet you get easy access and on-the-fly adjustment. It's got a powerful sequencer that supports both MIDI and audio recording, yet the smart control layout and mouse support make it easier to navigate than even most computer-based software. It's a road-worthy, rugged instrument, yet it's one of the sexiest looking keyboards around with a huge, full color LCD screen and gleaming aluminum chassis.

SuperNATURAL Sounds
Regardless of how sexy the Fantom looks, how many functions it boasts, and how easy it is to learn, a sub-par sound would be a deal-breaker. Fortunately, the Fantom G boasts all these amazing features as well as one of the most amazing sound engines in the industry. The Fantom line has always been hailed for the quality of its voices, and this newest incarnation has double the wave capacity of its predecessor. Classic acoustic and electric piano sounds, thick and flexible synth patches, and an assortment of orchestral sounds all sound impressive, but the Fantom G really shows off its stuff when you add an ARX SuperNATURAL expansion board to one of the Fantom's two expansion slots. SuperNATURAL is one of the most powerful synthesis engines at any price range; it's called SuperNATURAL, because the sounds these expansion cards produce goes beyond realism. For example, the ARX-01 card specializes in incredibly detailed and realistic drum sounds, and thanks to SuperNATURAL technology, you can build the simulated drums from the ground up, dictating shell width, wood type, snare buzz, room dimensions, and more. Since the ARX expansion cards sport their own processor, the complex sound generation won't slow down your Fantom in the least. If you dig tons of layered, lush, stereo effects, the Fantom is your best friend. Each multi-voice patch can support up to 22 simultaneous effects, with extensive routing and editing options to keep tweak-prone musicians happy for hours on end.

Touring Machine
You'll undoubtedly want to show these stunning sounds off on the road, and the Roland Fantom G8 is geared for world-class live performance. Like a luxury sports car, the Fantom has the power of a sophisticated machine, but the feel of a finely-tuned instrument, due in large part to the G8's top-notch, semi-weighted keyboard. 88 "Ivory Feel" keys have the action of a concert-class piano. They're quick and robust enough to accommodate the most complicated runs, and anyone who's tickled some real ivories will appreciate their satisfying feel. The Fantom's intuitive control layout also contributes to the the keyboard's live credentials. Eight sliders provide quick control over assignable parameters and live multi-voice mix levels, and the five rotary encoders are solid and smooth. Add in the combination pitch-bend/modulation joystick, and the additional real-time tactile controls make every patch even more expressive; sure the inspire some wild live-performance moments. The phenomenal "Ivory Feel" keys are matched by equally responsive, groove-box style trigger pads. These sixteen rubberized pads can be used to trigger samples, construct rhythm patterns, play loops, and mute individual channels in a sequence for DJ-style dropouts. Clever organizational features like "Set List" make it easy to access specific sounds quickly on stage, and the huge LCD screen makes it easy to double-check every aspect of a patch at a glance.

More Than A Sequencer, A Complete Studio
The generous screen also comes in handy when you're using the Roland Fantom G in its alter-ego mode: as a totally decked-out production studio. Any professional workstation is going to have a sequencer on-board for composition, but the Fantom G8 boasts Roland's "Power Sequencer", a full-fledged multi-track audio and MIDI sequencer that behaves more like a computer-based DAW than a traditional keyboard workstation. The Fantom G's arranger can handle up to 24 real audio tracks in addition to 128 MIDI tracks, with expandable recording memory for nearly two hours of CD-quality digital audio. With its plethora of analog inputs, audio can be recorded from just about any source--even high-end condenser mics, thanks the the phantom-powered, Neutrik "combi" XLR-1/4" jack. Use it to sample live drums, record studio-quality vocals, or plug a Hi-Z instrument like a guitar or bass directly in and make use of the Fantom's guitar-based effects. The G8's sliders, rotary knobs, four-way cursor control and Jog Wheel make it easy to operate and navigate through the mixer window and effects patch lists, but the Fantom G also supports USB mouse integration. Who needs a computer?

The Roland Fantom workstation has been around for almost nine years now, and with every iteration they get more powerful, sound more amazing, and are even easier to use. If you're looking for a single instrument that can master every aspect of modern music, from performance to composition to production, look no further than the Roland Fantom G8.

Roland Fantom-G8 88-Key Sampling Workstation Reviews

"Musican's Delight!"
Feature:
Phantom power, unlimited effects, ARX technology, "custom tuning of all the drums from shell width and diameter" realtime control, and precision key responce! If you dont like the natural sound of the instrument you can tune, tweak, and customize it to your liking.

Quality:
Solid as a rock! Keys feel very real "if you play piano" and the dynamic pad is precise "if your a drummer".

Value:
If you want to buy a product that is going to last you a life time than look no further! I have traveled, performed and used heavily durning recording without a problem

Desirability:
It's the new Fantom from Roland! Hot!!!!!

Sound:
I have owned the X8 now for nearly three years and have loved everyhing about it; from it's responce, sound, effects, and ease of use. The Fanton X is a musican's delight and anyone that can play piano and drums like I would absolutly agree! The sounds are very realistic, and the dynamic pad brings them to life. Just recently fooled with the new G series not thinking it could be any better, but I was very wrong. It now has unlimited effects, phantom power, mouse control, and an output for a bigger display to view your recording! Truly, what more could a musican need unless you want the machine to write the songs for ya!

Ease of Use:
Big fan of the Fantom X series, and it was very similar aswell, but you will want to invest in an external display. Not everyone will need it but it will definitly help out your realtime recording.

Support:
Roland's equipment has always worked well for me and all my friends, so we have not delt with them much. THANK GOD!

Overall:
This product gives you the most bang for your dollar BY FAR, but will take some time in getting used to the new Operating System. If you have ever used Adobe Audition, or Pro Tools then during live recordings you will feel welcome. The sound quality is great and with unlimited effects you can alter them to your needs. The filters and live recording tools are very similar to the X series, so X FANS go wild!

"Cool board, can't wait to check it out but: buyer beware (I'd wait until second OS upgrade, read the rest of the review)"
Feature:
Great if you want to have studio-in-a-box approach. I don't, I usually use my workstation sequencer for ideas and move to DAW later.

Quality:
Looks strong and has a lot of Fantom-X design which is built like a tank.

Value:
If Roland cleans its acts up and more supportive in fixing its issues, this would be higher.

Desirability:
Nope, I'm happy with my Motif XS8 and its Cubase/DAW integration which I bought after I sold my Fantom-X (I did try Korg M3-88 briefly but returned it, it was good but I couldn't stand its piano sound and velocity curve issue).

Sound:
Since I haven't tested it, I predict synth stuffs will be great but the acoustic sounds will be 'eh' (prove me wrong, Roland :-)

Ease of Use:
Big screen and mouse would help a lot. It'll be a lot of straining though if you put the mouse on top of the keyboard :P

Support:
I used to own Fantom X8 and there are quite some bugs in Fantom-X that weren't addressed in *two* OS upgrades. Fantom-G being a more complex keyboard with its big screen, mouse integration, new ARX system; I'm leery how many more bugs will be there and whether it would be addressed or Roland just comes up with new product and deserts previous users? Remember original Fantom which was a flop and within short period they release Fantom-S? Similar thing happen with Fantom-S to Fantom-X. Of course Fantom-X being a more mature products from 2 flops, they milk it for 4 years (without fixing the bugs) and comes up with Fantom-G. So I guess Roland just look at the sales of its board, if it's not good, don' fix it via OS, just create new ones and screw the current users.

Overall:
If you want to buy this, I'd suggest you wait until the initial pain and dust settle, see if it's indeed a quality board (OS bugwise). There will be some issues in the beginning of course but hopefully it'll be alot cleaner compared to its predecessor. I'd wait until the second OS release if I were to buy. Don't get me wrong, Roland is a great and innovative company, I owned their gears and I'm not a certain product fan-boi. I just found Roland's customer support lacking compared to the others which takes its toll on us as customers.
