PreSonus AudioBox 44VSL USB Audio Interface

No longer available at zZounds
More than just a 4-channel 96 kHz/24-bit USB audio interface, the PreSonus 44VSL comes loaded with reverbs, delays and more effects to spark your creativity.

The PreSonus AudioBox 44VSL packs just what you need to get your sound into the computer, through a DAW, and onto professional-sounding tracks. The 4-in, 4-out USB audio interface includes 4 mic preamps, 96 kHz/24-bit converters, low-latency effects processing, bundled DAW software, and much more. The included VSL (Virtual StudioLive) software mixer lets you track, mix and monitor through built-in effects like reverb, delay, compression, limiting, and more -- the same effects found on PreSonus' StudioLive digital consoles.

Lots of I/O for the Home Studio

On the front panel of the 44VSL, you'll find 4 mic preamps (two switchable to Hi-Z instrument inputs, two switchable to balanced line ins). You'll also find four balanced line outputs for feeding outboard gear, in addition to the balanced main L/R outs. There's a headphone jack, of course. MIDI I/O and USB 2.0 connectivity rounds out the AudioBox 44VSL. Rackmountable in a half-rack space, the slim interface won't take up much studio real estate.

Affordable, High-End Audio

Four built-in Class A XMAX microphone/instrument preamplifiers, globally switchable phantom power, and high-resolution converters provide high-headroom, rich audio quality no matter what you plug in to this audio interface, be it your guitar, bass, or studio mics. Just make sure you're running the latest PreSonus driver (downloadable from the company's website) before you get started, so you avoid awkward run-ins with static and pops that are read more easily corrected with a driver update.

Mix with VSL Effects

Your monitor mixes will thank you when you take advantage of the AudioBox 44VSL's included 8x4 Virtual StudioLive software mixer, which packs the same near-zero latency effects processing as PreSonus' digital mixers -- including Fat Channel reverb and delay, EQ, compression, limiting, and high-pass filters on all inputs and playback streams. More than 50 Fat Channel processor presets are there to get you started on your instrument and vocal recordings.

Get hands-on control of your monitor mixes by turning a single playback/input mix-control knob right on the interface.

Ships with Studio One Artist Software

No worries if you're in between DAWs -- the AudioBox 44VSL comes with its own. The included PreSonus Studio One Artist software (Mac/Windows) lets you create music with unlimited recording tracks and over 4 GB of built-in third-party content (software instruments, loops, sounds, and so forth) in an intuitive user interface.

System requirements:

Below are the minimum computer-system requirements for the AudioBox 1818VSL.

Windows

- Windows Vista, Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit)
- Intel Pentium 4 1.6 GHz processor or AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Turion) (2.8 GHz or faster recommended)
- 1 GB RAM (2 GB or more recommended)

Macintosh

- Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later (32- and 64-bit)
- Intel Core 1 Solo 1.5 GHz processor (Intel Core Duo or Intel Xeon processor recommended)
- 1 GB RAM (2 GB or more recommended)
- Windows and Macintosh Systems
- USB 2.0 Port
- Internet connection recommended
- DVD-ROM drive (required to install Studio One Artist)

Note that the speed of your processor, amount of RAM and size and speed of your hard drive will greatly affect the overall performance of your recording system. Also, a more powerful system (faster processor with more RAM) will allow for lower latency (signal delay) that you might experience while monitoring audio or MIDI signals.

Monitor resolution for both PC and Macintosh should be no lower than 1024x768 pixels.

The AudioBox 44VSL gets 4.5 stars for me, I upgraded to it from the Alesis Multimix USB. The unit and the software bundle that it comes with allowed me to eliminate the necessity of using the Alesis 3632 Gate/Expander Compressor. The sound quality of vocals comes out clear even with one of the low budget microphones Im using (CAD 2200 GXL).FeaturesIt allows you to record two microphones simultaneously, as long as you can eliminate mic bleed this unit gives you the ability to multi track vocals or any other sound source which is really helpful. With VSL it works seemlessly with any DAW to gate, eq, and compress the signal and passes that signal on to the armed track. The setup for this unit couldnt be easier just plugin USB, install StudioOne software and power up.Quality:This unit is built solid, I havent dropped it and Im not sure it would survive a drop. But you would have a hard time crushing it as its built like a tank. Knobs operate smoothly and one can feel the notches as gain and volume is adjusted on the unit.Manufacturer Support:I haven't needed it, but the website built for support is great.Value:To go from the Alesis MultiMix with its budget Mic pre's to the Audiobox 44VSL with the Presonus Xmax mic preamps and the price is very nice. The Audiobox is worth the extra hundred or so versus any other budget audio interface or mixer.
