"Buy the Logitech Z-2300 instead. Trust me!"

Feature:
Not much control and lacks a subwoofer. You're not going to get much low end punch with these. However, they look great and are very heavy weight.

Sound:
I purchased these thinking that since M-Audio makes a lot of great gear that these would be top notch. They always say in their ad that the wood cabinet that they use would sound much better than a typical multi-media speaker. Well, they obviously haven't done much listening. I decided to also purchase a pair of the THX certified Logitech Z2300 speakers, which cost about the same. The difference was like night and day. After plugging in the logitechs, I had the the AV-40s packed up before the song was over. I'm not saying that they were somewhat better. I'm saying that the logitech speakers destroyed these. Don't get me wrong. I like M-audio and use their products with my protools setup. But, when you can get the logitech Z2300 speakers for about the same money, you'd be nuts to use these.

Ease of Use:
They will only sound "okay" no matter what you do.

Overall:
You own it to yourself to put these next to the Logitech Z2300 speakers and make up your own mind. I listen to detailed music such as Jazz. So, I'm really not looking for a loud unbalanced speaker that lacks clarity. I want clear details and wide dynamic range. The Logitech Z2300 delivers that and provides a very smooth sound throughout its frequency range. Listening to them at the computer store really didn't do them justice. Take them home and listen. I was careful to ensure that I could do a side-by-side test. However, in retrospect, that wasn't necessary because the Logitechs sound so much better than these, that it will be obvious to you without the need to even turn on the AV-40s. The AV-40s might be more appealing if they were half their current price.

OptImage III Technology
M-Audio's proprietary OptImage III wave guide improves overall detail and clarity while minimizing sound issues that can plague other compact monitors. The system works by improving the overall efficiency of the tweeter as well as time-aligning the drivers. This ensures that the audio from each driver reaches the listener at the same time, guaranteeing precise stereo imaging and accurate response.

Magnetically Shielded for Desktop Use
Unchecked, all speakers emit electromagnetic waves that can wreak havoc with your computer's video monitor or a nearby TV. The Studiophile AV 40 monitors are magnetically shielded so that all of your electronic equipment can coexist on your desktop without interference.
