Korg has always been a leader in developing new electronic sounds and textures, but the Kronos breaks new ground by packing in 9 (yes, nine!) independent synthesis engines. All-new acoustic and electric piano emulators (with contributions from the likes of Herbie Hancock), a powerful engine for realistic plucked and bowed strings, and many more sound generators make the Kronos a one-stop-shop for keyboardists that aim to play and produce in a plethora of styles. If you play in a worship band, and you're also into ambient music, the Kronos has you covered. As a do-everything workstation, the Korg Kronos matches the audio quality and improves on the sonic flexibility of Korg's legendary OASYS synth -- without the excessive $8000+ price tag.
Nine Sound Engines to Cover All Your Bases
The Kronos boasts 9 layerable sound engines that share 200 voices of polyphony. There's the SGX-1 premium acoustic piano engine that faithfully reproduces German and Japanese acoustic grands -- with no unrealistic "looping" -- by streaming 4+ gigabytes of samples from the internal solid-state drive. There's the EP-1 electric piano engine with a selection of vintage pedal effects and amp emulations. Next up, you've got the CX-3 tonewheel organ emulator, which maps nine faders as drawbars, and three legacy virtual-analog synth engines with fun, intuitive on-screen patch-cord interfaces. You'll also find the MOD-7 VPM virtual FM waveshaping synth engine and the STR-1 string physical-modeling engine formerly found on the Korg OASYS. To top it off, there's the HD-1 high-definition sampling synth, which is something of a sonic one-stop-shop (in case you couldn't find what you were looking for in any of the other engines). All in all, it's crammed with 1,500+ endlessly customizable tones (known as Programs on a Korg), plus 1,792 versatile, usable Combinations, which can layer and split up to 16 Programs from any of the nine engines.
Tweakable Programs, Effects and KARMA
With all this flexibility, you won't run out of sounds anytime soon, especially when it's so easy to manipulate each Program in real time with the Kronos' dozens of tactile buttons, knobs, sliders, two joysticks and ribbon controller. The 8-inch color touchscreen displays graphical feedback as you tweak and tune every aspect of each sound. Pull up a grand piano program and watch the piano animation change onscreen as you adjust the lid opening and damper resonance, just like a virtual piano plug-in on a DAW -- except the Kronos has its own built-in control surface. You can beef up any Program with 185 high-quality effects, like Stereo Delay, Wah/Amp Sim, Chorus, and Flanger, ready to insert into 12 slots or strap across the master stereo bus. Korg has even included an onboard KARMA 2 module featuring Korg's exclusive algorithmic composition technology, with over 2000 presets that you can use to create dense rhythmic textures that can be altered and randomized in real time. You can create entire tracks with KARMA -- pro keyboard chops optional. And if you're a seasoned performer, and Korg's arpeggiator-on-steroids KARMA technology doesn't get you inspired, you might want to check your pulse.
Sequencing and Audio Recording
The 200-song, 16-track MIDI sequencer is augmented by a 16-track digital audio recorder that can record four simultaneous tracks at 48 kHz/24-bit resolution. Based on the Korg OASYS sequencer, all 32 tracks are simultaneously visible on the Kronos' huge screen. Build beats with 152 drum kits, or choose from 697 preset rhythm patterns to jam along with. If you're into sampling, you can now sample directly to the Kronos' ultra-fast-access 30 GB internal flash-based solid-state digital (SSD) drive (instead of a traditional hard drive), and auto-load your samples into RAM at startup. You can also plug in a USB thumb drive to back up your songs and sounds -- and if you use a DAW for production, use the Kronos' other USB port simultaneously to transmit audio and MIDI to and from your Mac or PC over a single cable. If you want a workstation that can serve as the heart of your home studio, there's a lot to love on the Kronos -- and a lot to learn. Korg makes it easier by displaying built-in manuals right on the touchscreen. Hold down "Help" and press a control, slider, or knob to get information on what it does, so you can get back to making music fast.
Set Lists and Smooth Sound Transitions
A new feature designed for live performance, Korg's Set List mode displays a numbered grid of your favorite Programs, Combinations, Songs from the sequencer, and/or Samples. Tap the touchscreen to scroll through up to 128 selections in each Set List, 16 at a time. You can save up to 128 Set Lists. Gigging keyboardists will love Korg's Smooth Sound Transition technology, which sustains held notes (and effects!) from the previous Program or Combination even as you select a new setup with your other hand -- creating seamless transitions live. The previous sound keeps going until you lift up your hand or take your foot off the sustain pedal. And live players will love the Kronos' sleek, professional appearance, with shiny, grand-piano-black end bezels. You'll want to take the Kronos with you wherever you go!
