What's special about this item?

Feature: What it does:
Mahogany body Rich, warm, focused sound; added sustain
LZ8 active pickups Thick, powerful tone with clarity and definition
Fixed Edge III-8 bridge Keeps all 8 strings in tune through dive bombs
Wizard II neck Fast and easy to play

Players looking for earth-shaking baritone guitar tones may not find a 6- or even 7-string guitar up to the task. Luckily for them, Ibanez has created the RGA8 -- an 8-string mahogany beast with active pickups -- to bring the low end.

Eight Strings Deep

Until 9-string guitars crack the mainstream, 8-string baritone axes like the Ibanez RGA8 let guitarists get just about as low as they can go without buying a standard bass guitar. The RGA8's bottom two strings allow for drop tunings well beyond the range of conventional guitars. The strings are draped across a slightly widened version of Ibanez's classic RG body shape, made of carved mahogany for a comfortable playing experience, whether you're standing or sitting.

A Wizard II Neck Wide Enough for the Job

It takes a special neck to handle eight strings, and the RGA8 offers players the 5-piece maple and walnut Wizard II neck. This 27-inch baritone-scale neck retains the thin profile shredders love, while offering a wider fretboard to accommodate two additional strings. Deep cutaways in the guitar's body mean players will have no trouble spreading their hands across the wide range of notes this guitar can make -- all the way up to the 24th fret. To add tuning stability, the neck is reinforced with KTS titanium rods.

Ibanez-Designed Pickups and EQ Switch

To satisfy the metal chuggers who pick up the RGA8, Ibanez developed the LZ8 pickup. The neck and bridge versions featured in this guitar feature active electronics, read more crafted to accurately capture the sound across all eight strings without getting a muddy low end -- even with the nastiest distortion. If you're looking to spice up your tone on the fly, try engaging the active EQ switch. This switch kicks in a +5 dB boost across the EQ spectrum and a -10 dB cut around 800 Hz. This makes for instant "scooped mid" tones preferred by many metal and hard rock rhythm players.
