When the SG first rolled off the production line in 1961, it quickly earned a reputation for extreme playability and excellent rock tone. The 1960s Tribute SG Special distills the SG to its core with a streamlined appearance and pair of versatile P-90 pickups. Available in a set of vintage finishes, the 1960s Tribute SG is a rare opportunity to own a classic-style Gibson SG at an amazing price.

Powerful P-90 Pickups

The 1960s Tribute SG Special wields a pair of Alnico P-90s much like many of the original SG releases. Known for their sonic versatility, P-90s strike an excellent balance between the mid-range punch of a humbucker and the high-end bite of a single-coil. Both pickups are equipped with individual volume and tone controls, and selectable through a three-way pickup switch providing a full range of tonal options to dial-in. While SGs are most closely associated with the rock tones of legends like Frank Zappa and Angus Young, the versatility of the dual P-90s makes the 1960s Tribute SG Special equally adept at handling funk, blues, and even jazz.

Classic SG Playability

The original SG was designed with two main goals: to reduce body weight and enhance upper neck access. As such, the SG featured a dual-horned cutaway design, a slimmer body, and overall less weight than other Gibsons of the era. The 1960s Tribute SG Special maintains all these qualities making this an extremely playable guitar. Adding to the comfortable feel is a classic SlimTaper (tm) neck profile which is ideal for both chunkier power-chords and upper-fret shredding.

Mahogany Neck and Body with Sturdy Neck Joint

Like many of Gibson's most prized solidbodies, 1960s Tribute SG Special uses the classic combination of a mahogany body and mahogany neck. This versatile tonewood endows the 1960s Tribute SG Special with warm mid-range depth and a bold resonance. Both pieces are joined with the deep-set, glued-in tenon considered by many to be the key to that legendary Gibson sustain. The neck is capped with a North American rosewood fingerboard which adds to both the comfort and tone of this guitar.

Vintage Hardware and style

Honoring the legacy of the first decade of SG production, the 1960s Tribute SG Special sports a distinctly vintage vibe. Hardware includes a tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and vintage-style tuners all in line with the classic era of SG production. Also alluding to some of the earliest SG production years are an array of attractive finishes which give the 1960s Tribute SG a definitely vintage look.

Features:

- Classic SG body with comfortable weight and upper fret access
- Dual P-90s for bold, versatile tone
- Fast and playable 1960 SlimTaper (tm) neck profile
- Mahogany neck and body connected with sturdy, deep-glued neck joint
- Rosewood fingerboard with acrylic dot inlays
- Limited run with included gig bag

The 1960s Tribute SG Special is a limited run model and won't be available for long. Featuring a full range of classic SG features, an attractive vintage style, and an unbelievable price-tag, the 1960s Tribute SG Special is an amazing deal on a one-of-a-kind Gibson SG.

Product Description

Pure power designed for the modern guitarist! What do Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, and Tony Iommi all have in common? Back in the '60s, each of these legendary guitarists played a Gibson SG Special with P-90 pickups and made music history in the process. To bring this beloved rocker back to guitarists in the 21st century, Gibson USA introduces the SG Special '60s Tribute, a guitar that honors the beloved SG Specials of nearly 50 years ago, in an instrument primed with the tone, versatility, and playability demanded by modern musicians.

Since its arrival on the scene in 1961 (originally as the Les Paul/SG Special), Gibson's dual-horned, double-cutaway SG has been an iconic rock axe, and has become known for solid performance and tonal versatility that is unparalleled in the guitar world. The SG Special '60s Tribute is based around the same revered tonewoods, glued-in neck, and Alnico-magnet P-90 pickups that made its predecessor legendary, with the same SlimTaper '60s neck profile that is behind some of the fastest-playing guitars in history. Stripped-down and ready for business in your choice of Worn Cherry, Worn Natural, Worn Ebony or Worn White, the SG Special '60s Tribute has the look and feel of a well-played friend right out of the gigbag, and comes in at a price that any hard-working player can afford.

It's more than just a coincidence that mahogany is one of the most prized woods for electric guitar design, and the Gibson USA SG Special '60s Tribute is a classic example of the use of this fine tonewood in an instrument that's both subtle and aggressive. The thin solid-mahogany body offers a considerable reduction on weight when compared to many other solidbody electrics, while presenting a warm, rich resonance with lots of harmonic depth and sparkle.

The SG Special '60s Trubute's solid mahogany neck is carved to a fast SlimTaper profile similar to SGs from the '60s, for superb in-the-hand comfort and outstanding playability, while it's glued in deep-set, long-tenon neck/body joint and 17-degree back angled headstock team up to provide a transference of neck resonance into the body that's far superior to other neck designs.

Two Gibson P-90 single-coil pickups with genuine Alnico V magnets--some of the finest reproductions of vintage P-90s currently available--yield everything from warm, vocal neck tones to plenty of bark and snarl from the bridge position, with round and funky tones in between, all at the flip of a three-way toggle switch. To enhance all this tonal splendor, a stopbar tailpiece provides a rock-solid anchor behind Gibson's legendary Tune-o-matic tailpiece, prized for its ability to enhance singing sustain while remaining highly adjustable to perfect your instrument's intonation.

At the other end of the neck, a PLEK-cut Corian nut ensures superior resonance and sustain. Wrap it all in a thin nitrocellulose finish in Worn Cherry, Worn Natural, Worn White or Worn Ebony, with the smaller early '60s pickguard and pearloid dot fingerboard inlays, and it's a guitar that looks as raw and meaty as it sounds.

Body and Finish

A solid mahogany body with beveled edges for added comfort and that distinctive dual-horned double-cutaway design are hallmarks of the legendary SG Special '60s Tribute. The guitar's select mahogany rings with all the depth and richness you'd expect from a classic tonewood.

Neck and Headstock

The SG Special '60s Tribute is crafted in classic Gibson style with a glued-in neck made from solid quarter-sawn mahogany and topped with an unbound rosewood fingerboard. It has an angled headstock for superior resonance, and its SlimTaper '60s profile and 1 11/16 inch wide Corian nut help to make it supremely playable.

Pickups and Electronics

Two Gibson P-90 single-coil pickups with genuine Alnico V magnets, just like on the original SG Special, yield everything from warm, vocal neck tones to plenty of bark and snarl from the bridge position, with round and funky tones in between. They are routed through the classic Gibson four-knob and three-way switch control section.

Hardware

The hardware set on the SG Special '60s Tribute echoes that worn by several classic SGs since the 1960s, and includes Gibson's hallowed Tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and vintage-style tuners. A classic of 20th century guitar design, the Tune-o-matic provides excellent resonant coupling, while offering efficient independent adjustment of each saddle for precise intonation.

Features

- Solid Mahogany body with Rosewood fingerboard for loads of sustain and beefy tone
- Slim, fast '60s style neck profile
- Available in four classic worn finishes
- Two Gibson USA P-90 Pickups for that classic hot single coil tone
- Vintage Kluson-Style tuners with perloid buttons

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Killer Guitar For a Great Price"
Overall: This guitar is sick! The warm tone I have been able to get is exactly what I was looking for in a guitar. I had to re-work my effects rig to get the exact sound I wanted but, it's just incredibly creamy and warm all the way through. For the price, the ability to play while I pay, and the quality that goes along with any Gibson, this guitar looks and sounds amazing. For those of you who want to get a creamy, warm distortion with great clarity and awesome sustain this is the guitar for you....and definitely the guitar for me!
Style of Music: I play in 2 bands. The Pantone Trio, and Jet Driver. The Pantone Trio - Blues/Rock/Funk Jet Driver - Indie/Rock

"Mean looking guitar with an in your face tone!"
Sound: I specifically bought this guitar for the P-90s. Nothing sounds like a P-90. Especially on an all mahogany body with the great feel of an SG. I've wanted a Les Paul Jr (so ridiculously over-priced, and only 1 pup) to get that Mick Jones sound from The Clash's 1st album. Bridge pickup has a great snarl with EL34 tubes. Sounds awesome with EL84s too, possibly better. Neck Pup better on clean tone has warm soft tone. Distorted neck good for bluesy leads w/delay. Feature: Guitars made in th USA should come with hardshell case!!! Gigbags are pretty useless to me. Ease of Use: Truss rod, saddles, bridge height, pickup height are easily adjusted. Out of box the guitar was way out of whack, but nice thing about new guitars in my estimation is they're easier to set up. Even for a player, not a tech, like myself. Easier not easy. Quality: I keep hearing horror stories about the Quality Control at Gibson, but I the SG Tribute seems to be made to be abused and played, not lustfully drooled upon. I have no complaints. I've always liked Deluxe tuners, I've avoided the SG Classic b/c of those cheap 'First Act' type tuners. Nitro finished feels different from lacquer, but acceptable. I do prefer lacquer, but for this price... Value: For a Gibson SG, YES! But should come with HSC. Manufacturer Support: I've been playing Gibson guitars since 1990, and have never had to deal with them. The Wow Factor: In worn white it looks menacing. Overall: I'll play it 'til I break it. I may swap pickups for SD P-90s in the future
