For the sustain and style of an SG with the unmistakable edge of two P-90s, check out the Gibson SG Standard P90.

The Gibson SG Standard P-90 a confirmed classic ever since its arrival in 1961, SGs of various types have been played by Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Frank Zappa, Robby Krieger, Angus Young, Derek Trucks, Jeff Tweedy, and countless other rock, blues and alternative artists. While the SG Standard's original specs included a pair of humbucking pickups, many players have always loved the hot, raw sound of single-coil P-90 pickups, as found on the SG Special and Junior guitars, which otherwise had more austere features. Now Gibson USA introduces the SG Standard With P-90s, which features all the appointments of the Standard model, but is equipped with a pair of authentic P-90 pickups. Finished in your choice of Heritage Cherry or Ebony Black-both in hand-sprayed, high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer-the SG Standard With P-90s brings together the features and electronics of two legendary SG models for the first time, and creates a timeless classic in the process.

Like the original SGs of the '60s and all of the classic variations since, the Gibson USA SG Standard With P-90s has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the iconic asymmetrical "double-horned" deep double-cutaway design (attractive Grade-A timber is used beneath the translucent finish of the Heritage Cherry guitars). A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG's characteristic beveled edge-a traditional read more part of this model's distinctive styling-the mahogany's light weight also enhances playing comfort. The guitar's quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved to a rounded profile that feels sublimely comfortable in the hand. It is glued into the body with Gibson's acclaimed mortise-and-tennon neck joint, and topped with a baked maple fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets, dressed in vintage cream binding. Acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, a mother-of-pearl headstock logo and holly inlay, a five-ply late-'60s style pickguard, and a black truss-rod cover engraved with "SG" round out this eye-catching package.

To take it all into raw and rugged sonic territory, Gibson USA equips the SG Standard With P-90s with a pair of the authentic P-90 single-coil pickups that help to give this guitar its name. Made just like the originals that were introduced by Gibson way back in 1946-and have been favorites ever since-each of these pickups carries a pair of Alnico V bar magnets and is wound with 42 AWG wire for a tone that is meaty and thick, yet clear and articulate, with that characteristic P-90 edge and bite. Your tone is anchored by the classic pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, with a set of TonePros vintage-style keystone tuners installed at the other side of the PLEK-cut Corian nut. Put it all together, and the SG Standard With P-90s is a smoking slab of vintage mojo.

The instrument came in a case reminiscent of those used in other gibson products although it was black with white interior as opposed to the brown case with purple interior used in my LP standard. Very good construction. The SG weighs less than the Les Paul and the finish was immaculate. The sound has a bite and clarity that you have to fight to get with regular humbuckers. The P90's seem to have the "balls" of the humbucker with with the clarity and chime of single coils. They also have the hum associated with single coils but if you have a noise gate you can circumvent that issue. The only issue I have had with this guitar has been with the Kluson tuners. You cannot tighten them and the tuner on the G-string is constantly detuning. I understand that this is supposed to resemble a vintage instrument but the tuners could have been better. Either way, if you spend a thousand bucks on a guitar the. tuners should hold tune. Either way I think I am going to either have Gibson send a replacement set or I will replace them with some locking tuners that are retrofitted for an SG.
