Capture the sounds of rock titans like Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young with the Gibson SG Special '70s Tribute. This vintage-style SG features two versatile mini-humbuckers, an ultra-comfortable neck, and a full complement of old-school appointments. Built by the master craftsmen at Gibson USA, the SG '70s Tribute is an outstanding deal on a classic rock icon.

Versatile Mini-humbuckers and Vintage Gibson Tone

Gibson's modern dual blade alnico mini-humbuckers pack all the sizzle and punch that made the SG a go-to instrument for '70s rock. These versatile pickups provide massive tonal potential channeling everything from the rounded rock tones of a PAF humbucker to the shimmering high-end of a single-coil. With the '70s Tribute SG, the mahogany body and set neck provide an astounding degree of sustain through the guitar, and the use of a baked maple fretboard gives extra snap and clarity.

Classic SG Looks and Feel

Like any SG, the '70s Tribute starts with a foundation of a mahogany body with two sharp cutaways and sleek beveled edges. The unique SG body shape provides both unhindered upper-fret access and an exceptionally balanced feel. The neck features a thin-to-thick profile which suits lower fret chord progressions and upper-octave solos. Adding to the overall vintage flair are a chrome tune-o-matic bridge, block inlays on the baked maple fretboard, and a grain-textured satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

Product Description

Rock music might have developed through the 1960s, but it came of age in the 1970's, often played on great Gibson guitars of the era. To capture the look, feel and tone of the instruments that made massive music during a decade when rock was king, Gibson USA introduces the SG Studio '70s Tribute, part of a series that also includes a Firebird Studio and Les Paul Studio with complementary features. The Gibson SG Studio '70s Tribute offers all the quality and performance that has made the Studio range so popular with hard-gigging guitarists since its introduction in 1983, with crucial updates that ally it to many legendary Gibson guitars of the 1970s. Wrap your hand around the unique thin-to-thick neck carve of the SG Studio '70s tribute with a profile that starts out slim at the lower frets and becomes increasingly chunky as you slide toward the joint and you're rocketed straight back to an age of fierce, fast soloing. In the tone department, it carries a pair of new Dual Blade Alnico mini-humbuckers for great, vintage-edged tones with plenty of contemporary versatility. To top it off, the SG Studio '70s Tribute looks great in your choice of Vintage Sunburst, Cherry, Ebony Black or Silver Burst finish, all in grain-textured satin nitrocellulose lacquer.

Body

Like the most revered vintage SGs, the SG Studio '70s Tribute starts with a solid mahogany body. This classic tonewood offers superb depth and balance, and is extremely light for optimum playing comfort. Carved to the traditional asymmetrical double-cutaway shape, the SG also offers outstanding upper-fret access. Like many great Gibsons of the '70s, the neck is made from maple and carved to a profile unique to the era, which measures .800" deep at the 1st fret and increases to .963" at the 12th, with a volute behind the nut to both strengthen the headstock joint and enhance neck resonance. A chocolate-brown baked maple fingerboard carries traditional trapezoid inlays, and terminates in a PLEK-cut Corian nut with a width of 1-11/16". As with many Studio models, the SG Studio '70s Tribute keeps it all down to basics and saves you money by omitting fingerboard binding. Its look is complemented by a cream pickguard and pickup rings and gold knobs (Vintage Sunburst and Ebony Black) or black guard, rings and knobs (Silver Burst and Cherry), and traditional gold Gibson and Les Paul Model silkscreens on all but the Silver Burst, which has silver silkscreens.

Pickups

To help the SG Studio '70s Tribute rock with unparalleled character and articulation, Gibson USA loads it with a pair of Dual Blade Alnico mini-humbuckers. Entirely new pickups from Gibson USA, these units improve upon the best attributes of the former Mini Humbuckers seen in the Les Paul Deluxe in the '70s, and the different Firebird mini-humbuckers of the early 60s, in an efficient design that uses dual steel blades and an Alnico magnet for a vintage voice that still retains plenty of chime. These pickups are calibrated for balanced output between the neck and bridge positions, yielding everything from singing bluesy neck tones to crunchy and wailing leads, and are dressed in solid chrome covers. They are routed through the traditional four-knob and three-way switch wiring set up, and partnered with a 'Tune-o-matic' bridge and stopbar tailpiece for optimum sustain and precise intonation. A set of vintage-style TonePros tuners with pearloid keys rounds out the package. Each guitar includes a Gibson gigbag and owners manual, and is covered by Gibsons Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Unique SG"
Sound: Great tones, bright, clean and still able to get plenty of fuzz. Feature: Love the volute (not as prminent as the one on my '73 LP custom) and large headstock. Small block inlays are nice too. Wish it had neck binding, but it is a Special. Also, the finish is nice but would have preferred glossy. I got the vintage sunburst model. Ease of Use: Gets lots of sustain. Quality: Excellent Gibson quality - will last forever if taken care of. Value: This is a great value at $849. I think it's value will hold or increase due to the uniqueness of this model. Manufacturer Support: Excellent support. Mine came without the truss rod tool and Gibson sent me one immediately. The Wow Factor: Great looking guitar. Overall: This is a great guitar. It's the third SG I've owned and I would rank it overall below my custom and above my standard.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "First REAL!!! instrument."
Quality: The paint was well done, the guitar keeps in tune very well, and the fret and neck work was perfect. Overall: First of all I got to say this thing looks amazing, perfect paint job, perfect neck and fret work, the pickups incredible this on a line 6 can't imagine what it'll sound like through a tube amp. The neck pick up was smooth and sounded very close to full humbucker while the bridge pickup gave me searing leads. It may be excitement being my first Gibson but this guitar is amazing at this price point.
