This Custom Shop Dicky Betts Gibson SG Standard electric guitar is loaded with features that will delight any Allman Brothers Band fan.

Whether you're an on-tour Rambling Man or tied to the Whipping Post of the studio, the Dickey Betts Custom SG is a magnificent guitar like no other. As the story goes, Dickey Betts was tired of waiting for Duane Allman to tune, and gave him the famous "From One Brother to Another" SG so he'd have another quality guitar to take on the road. With this release, the Gibson Custom Shop has recreated every detail of Betts' original early '60s SG with astonishing accuracy and care. The result is a stunning guitar worthy of the tone and talent of two Allman Brothers legends.

Classic Allman Brothers Tone

When you think of the guitar work of the Allman Brothers Band, you think of sweet, singing leads layered over bluesy rhythms and driving percussion. The versatile tonal capabilities offered by a classic Gibson solid-body made it an obvious choice for the band's guitarists. The Betts SG features two Custom Bucker pickups modeled after the powerful humbuckers of the early '60s. Using Alnico III magnets and slightly mismatched and unpotted coils, these pickups provide the same full-bodied yet articulate tone heard on countless Allman Brothers recordings. The body is made from a single piece of mahogany with a mahogany neck crafted in Dickey's preferred thin '60s profile.

Aged Finish and Vintage-style Hardware

A limited run of the Dickey Betts SG have been custom aged to give the look and feel of a genuine early '60s road warrior guitar. Gibson has replicated the original Betts SG so read more closely that even small markings on the front and back are included in the process. Also true to the original is the inclusion of a add-on wraparound tailpiece, ABR-1 bridge, chrome tuners, and trapezoid inlays.

Gibson Custom Shop Dickey Betts SG STD

One of the most storied guitars in Rock and Roll history, this 1961/62 SG Standard has been recreated in a very small run, each a replica of the guitar handed to Duane Allman by Dickey Betts as a gift during their playing days together. Dickey's motivation for such generosity was to solve the time it took Duane to re-tune between songs: "From One Brother to Another".

The limited Edition Dickey Betts "From One Brother to Another" SG's historical accuracy is uniquely enhanced by Gibson Custom's exclusive aging process and access to the original instrument. Through an intensive study of the original, which includes digital scanning of the guitar at the Custom Shop, every technical detail as well as every unique instance of wear is captured in stunning accuracy. Dickey himself has made the final approval of the resulting guitar.

The body of the Dickey Betts "From One Brother to Another" SG is constructed from one piece of genuine mahogany, carved to the historically accurate early '60s SG shape with dual asymmetrical horns and beveled edges. A deep-set glued-in neck is carved from one piece of superior quarter-sawn mahogany and topped with a rosewood fingerboard with 22 "banjo frets" like the original. All examples are finished in genuine hand-sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer in Vintage Red; 75 of these will be meticulously hand aged to match the look of the original guitar, while a further 250 will be treated to Gibson Custom's acclaimed VOS process, which exhibits the look of a gently aged and faded instrument. Details of the hand aging include the extreme fading and minor wear on the top of the SG, the ageing of all hardware and plastics, and considerable wear to the back of the neck, with minor dings and large patches of finish missing do to the heavy playing time this guitar experienced. All in all, the Dickey Betts "From One Brother to Another" SG accurately embodies the look and feel of the original 1961/62 SG given to Allman by Betts.

SG Standards of the early '60s carried some of the finest Gibson humbucking pickups ever made, units in transition between the "Patent Applied For" and "Patent Number" eras. To capture this superlative tone, Gibson Custom loads the Dickey Betts "From One Brother To Another" SG with a pair of Custom Buckers with aged nickel covers, wound and constructed to precise PAF specs, with rare Alnico III magnets and slightly mismatched and unpotted coils, two of the secrets to the articulate and slightly edgy tone for which great PAF and Patent No. pickups are famous. The guitar carries a genuine Nylon 6/6 nut, with slots cut on Gibson's PLEK for optimum precision, which are matched by nylon saddles in the ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge. To mirror a popular modification of the time, as performed on the original guitar, this SG carries a stopbar tailpiece in place of the Lyre vibrola, an upgrade undertaken to improve sustain and stability, while a set of enclosed metal-button nickel tuners represent another common modification. All in all, this exclusive guitar presents a miraculous means of getting a realistic slice of Allman Brothers tone and history into your hands--but numbers are extremely limited.

Each guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case; 75 hand-aged examples include a leather Certificate of Authenticity signed by Dickey Betts and a collage poster of the original guitar signed by the Custom Shop. The remaining 250 VOS examples include a Certificate of Authenticity and collage poster. All are covered by Gibson's Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service.
